Art Journaling Wonderful and Messy Feelings

Video sharing how to build an art journal page with scribbled feelings and stenciling with Carolyn Dube Guest-Artist

My feelings were messy. Not emotionally messy, just scribbly and playfully messy. I never know where the play will take me and for this page I even ended up adding a ton of white space!

Why am I journaling feelings today? I’m the guest artist at Tiare Smith’s Journal About Me (JAM) year long free event. The prompts for this week are to use stencils and I feel____.  Apparently I felt messy based on this art journal page!

When I got the end of my play for the day…I couldn’t decide whether or not this page was finished. Be sure to let me know what you think I should do next to it.

Watch Art journaling with scribbled words and stencil masks on YouTube.

I used all those scribbly feelings to create a colorful dancer using one of the 6 masks that come with my Dance of This Life stencil from StencilGirl.

So is this page finished?   I was on the fence when I finished filming the video.  But now I know it isn’t.  What do you think I should do next to it?

It is great but personally I would like to see a bit more, what that more is I don’t know, but something.

P.s It reminds me of the film The Sound of music with Maria running through the mountains, enjoying the freedom of the nunnery. (Are you too young to know that film? Probably)

If it were me, I’d put more color & design in the background, then outline the words & figure in either black or white to make them stand out more. Maybe some butterflies in there?

I agree! That white space is probably going to disappear Candi…butterflies would be fun too!

Hello Carolyn. I loved this video and i am eager to try this scribbling technique. I wonder if you have stenciled your t-shirt seen at the beginning of the video. I loved it, too.It looks great on you. And it says all things spring to me 🙂 Have a nice weekend… 🙂

Can’t wait to see what you create with it Ozge! Yup, did stencil the tshirt 🙂

Here’s my thoughts on an already great page: The openness at the top is what I feel needs something. The top and right sides are white so the eye has nothing to stop from going off the page. This might be intentional since dancers need to keep dancing somewhere and not in one place. The tension with this does have an unfinished feel. A stark black line like everyone does these days would be very wrong. Even a vague smudging of color might create a sense of boundary without sacrificing the openness. I guess you could be literal, too, and put in some stage lights but that’s not my vote.

If it was my page I would have stopped but I don’t think it looks like a Carolyn Dube finished page (yet). The scribbles and swirls give the dancer a sense of movement but more background scribbles will take away from the impact of the dancer’s scribbles. Maybe she needs a shadow or aura around her in a slightly darker colour than the white (maybe yellow)? Would love to see what happens to this page anyway because I don’t think you’ve finished with it yet.

I would leave it just the way it is. It is beautiful in its simplicity. 🙂

I love the essence of the page which feels like flowing….. I would put some type of edge or smear of color around the top and right side to give it a gentle boundary. Then I would consider putting a flowing ribbon in her hands. Maybe just the ribbon and see what that looks like. Love your videos!!

I feel it is done. To me, it is very “full” because of the scribbled feelings down under the paint…BUT, if I did not know what you had done, maybe it does need more. That was a big help.?

The masks are great. I can see doing a lot of different things with them. Can you tell me what product you used for the stencil? Hugs

Love the page, so far….You have to add more!

Yellow drippage coming from top right – then it’s finished.
