What We See

The mind is a funny thing.  I have been scanning old family slides and I was struck by how my memory of the events and people seem so different from what is in the photos.  I believe my memories to be accurate but the photos tell a different story.  I don’t think the slides magically changed in 30 years so it must have been me that changed in that time.  This quote and journal page summed up how I felt after I saw those old slides.

The purple base that I started with was made previously.  You can see it being made in a video here.

Carolyn, I sure did enjoy your video. Most YouTube and other videos don’t work well on my ancient computer, but I saw all of yours at the same time the music was playing, something rare for me! Loved your work and the quote.

Ohhh I love the quote! But what I like even more is the way you wrote it down, all those colors.. it creates a psychedelic effect, really love that!

I love that quote too. I go through the same thing as you: when I read my journals from years ago, it never seems to match my memories of that time. I guess that can be good at times…we subconsciously protect ourselves from hurt. But why is it that we often remember bad things about a situation that wasn’t bad to begin with?? Thanks for sharing your page and video. It has given me things to think about. 🙂

Love the quote and love what you did with it. How long did it take you to make this piece in real time?

    • Carolyn Dube April 7, 2012, 1:25 pm

I already had the purple starting layer done so everything on the video you saw was about half an hour.

They say if ten people watched an accident happen they would have ten different versions. Siblings can remember events completely differently or have no memory of them at all. My memories can be different than what I wrote at the time, so photos shedding a different light doesn’t surprise me. It is all interpretation. At the moment and what we choose to remember. I love the quote. So true. And I love the page you made from it. 🙂

  • Paula - Buenos Aires April 7, 2012, 4:46 pm

Awesome quote. In love with your colour choices.

  • JKW April 8, 2012, 9:19 pm

OMGosh this is so true. We see things as we are and later we have changed, we would see the same things differently. That’s why you don’t remember them the same way, you’ve already changed again!! Love this post and the art work that began it. Blessings, Janet, PPF
