Have You Tried VerDay Paint and Patina to Make Rust?

Carolyn plays with VerDay paint and patina to turn paper into old rusted pattern with a stencil in a fun video

What do you need to turn paper into metal?  VerDay paint!  This stuff is fantastic for creating a patina of old metal on anything you can paint. In the video you’ll see my explorations and how I turned the rusted paper into a quick card.

Video tutorial using VerDay paint and patinaTenSecondsStudio sent several of these sets out for the StencilGirl team to play with and there’s a giveaway too!  You can find all the details at the end of this post.

I could have been precise and perfect with my stenciling, but I decided to go loose and messy as I experimented around using 3 stencils, Verbage, Circles Layer Me, and Squares Layer Me.

Today, I’m making a card and you know how I detest measuring so that means my cards are always a little off.  Frankly, even when I measure super carefully they are a little off so that’s why I don’t measure carefully.  But I do like the look of it lining up and I’m sharing my quick and easy way to line up the card and the paper I’m attaching.

The Almost Oops…I’ve never had an almost oops before that I can remember.  I thought it was going to be a very big oops…but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Here’s a close up of the brass with those wonderful bits of blue that appeared as the patina activated the wet paint.  I can’t wait to play around with this paper in my journal.

I’m not a professional wire artisan but I am an art adventurer.  That means I’ll jump in and do things I don’t know how to do and just to see what happens.  That is exactly what happened with the wire.  I have no idea if these are the “right” pliers and tools for this job.  I just know they are what I have so I’m using them.  My wire heart is a bit…imperfect…so that means it is perfect to me!Carolyn plays with VerDay paint and patina to turn paper into old rusted pattern with a stencil in a fun video

  • Boo Martin August 18, 2015, 7:31 am

    Carolyn,
You are so entertaining. I had to laugh about you trying to get the card perfectly straight. I was a card maker first and my plan is to have everything at an angle. Then you never have to worry about things being straight.
That paint looks like so much fun!!!

  • Suztats August 18, 2015, 7:33 am

Love ALL THINGS RUSTY. Really liked the Patina look you got on the card you didn’t use. So does this mean I can really make my very own rust & patina look??? OMG, the free time I will have from NOT scanning random driveways for rusty objects.

  • Kathy Gledsdale August 19, 2015, 11:03 am

Love this paint, just sad it is so hard to get hold of in the UK. I have to send abroad for it. You really have given it a touch of extra magic with the stencils. A lovely card. Do you think you could use the paint on a geli plate or would it spoil the plate? I have never been brave enough to try!

    • Carolyn Dube August 19, 2015, 11:07 am

My attitude is there are 2 sides to the gelli plate® so if I trash one side I always have the other. This paint has metal in it I believe so it is not something I have used on the plate before but it behaves like acrylic paints and cleans up with water so I imagine it could work on it- just don’t know if there are any ingredients in it that would be rough on the plate. Well…doesn’t this sound like a politicians answer…hope it helps!

  • Dana Hobbs August 19, 2015, 11:05 am

  • Antoine March 9, 2020, 2:50 pm

    Hi there,
congratulations for your post! Super interesting. I have one question though: where is it possible to buy the VerDay Kit of Reactive Metal Paint & Patina?

The online shop of Ten Seconds Studio is not reachable. Please help!

    Thanks a lot!

  • Suanne huffman March 26, 2020, 9:45 am

I LOVE this stuff! I have used it on everything I can find. Maybe it would work on my husband? He could use some upcycling. It looks very natural, and the effect is always surprising. Never the same so be sure to write down what you used, especially when layering different patinas. The only criticism i have is why can’t we buy it locally? It would be nice to avoid the postage cost.

  • Kimberly October 28, 2020, 6:57 pm

I’m assuming Ten Seconds Studio is no longer in business since I cant find their website. Do you know of another product that does the same thing?
    Thanks
    Kimberly
