Finding the Silly Love Story in My Art Journal

Will the silly story in my art journal "Tale of the Love of Johnny Cakes" win a Pulitzer Prize...probably not but it sure was fun to make the video! Enjoy a chuckle or two! Picasso's Words stencil by Carolyn Dube for StencilGirl Products

When I play in my art journal sometimes a story is revealed to me.  This particular tale, of two lovers separated by time and space brought together thanks to Johnny Cakes, isn’t really Pulitzer prize worthy.   In fact, it is quite a silly love story and I like it that way.

Between you and me…I expected to create a very modern looking art journal page as I added some stenciling to the page.  I was thinking modern.  I was feeling modern.  And then my art journal led me a totally silly, fun, and playfully different way.

Enjoy a chuckle as I play around and create a story with classic elements of story telling and you’ll even get to see more of my postage stamp quirks in the video!

And I’ve never had a Johnny Cake before.  Does anyone know if they are any good?

WOW!That was so much fun. If I didn’t have a bunch of cooking to do, I would be running to my craft desk right now. Thanks for the inspiration.

That was a great video and I loved hearing the story progress. This journal page is absolutely lovely. I really liked the way you used the stencil and vintage cookbook pages!

Carolyn, it’s so cute an innocent, you know I love those illustrations, and I love kids book illustrations, it is so much fun to work with them. Of course that stencil adds a great deal to it 😉

Where I come from we call them hoe cakes and eat them with any meal (especially good with greens & fried catfish).

That was awesome! You really know how to whip up a story. Sort of like those “Fractured Fairy Tales”! But my heart was in my throat every time I saw how close those sharp scissors came to your fingertips! I cannot begin to tell you how many times I’ve cut into my own delicate flesh with mine. Once even required a trip to the doctor and my first, non-surgery related stitches! So please take care, my friend. Learn from my mistakes… 😉

Loved listening to your story as you were creating the page.

You are so funny! Where I grew up (Michigan), Johnny Cake was a yellow corn bread with some sugar in it and maybe an extra egg as it was lighter than regular corn bead. Think Jiffy Corn Bread in a box.

One story goes that Johnny cakes were originally called “journey cakes”. Travelers could store them in their leather satchel attached to the saddle of their horse and they could ride long distances and have something to eat when a tavern or inn was not close by. So your journal page was spot on – the lady probably waved him off with a stack of journey cakes! Loved your page!
