Once I saw something in this art journal page I couldn't un-see it! Does that ever happen to you?Do you ever see something in an art journal page and no matter what you can’t un-see it?  I didn’t want to see this.  I tried to ignore it.  This was one persistent tree…sort of like the one that keeps growing right in the middle of my garden…

Once I saw something in this art journal page I couldn't un-see it! Does that ever happen to you?

Here’s the messy, going nowhere, art journal page I had in my art journal from play long ago.  I love the stamp I used.  I love the stencil I used. But I don’t love this page so far.

But after a few colors were added it made me much much happier.  And then I saw it.  A tree.  I don’t want to do a tree.  I am not usually a tree person.

So I tried to ignore the tree.  That so didn’t work.  The tree would not go away.

Well, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

I made the tree…with a new goodie I found called a Krink Paint stick. It is like a big soft crayon of permanent paint (that won’t smear, run, etc. once it dries).  The white was wonderfully opaque!

Once I saw something in this art journal page I couldn't un-see it! Does that ever happen to you?

And then I embraced the tree. No more reservations or hesitation.  I became a tree person.

A bit green and then more Krink Paint stick.

A little definition and journaling with my tried and true Stabilo pencil.

The tree became an orange tree thanks to the cap of a reinker.  So…turns out my muse says I am a tree person…and I say I am a fruit tree person…

Video of an art journal page that reminded me of a very important message

Art journaling has such power for me.  Why? Because sometimes it reminds me of important messages from time to time. And that is exactly what happened today.

Notice her chin.  There’s no paint there and that is rather unusual since this was a print from a fully loaded Gelli Plate.  And then I stamped right over it without even realizing there was a paintless spot.

What was her message?  Even if she takes one on the chin, she will be a survivor because she always knows where her True North is.

Here’s a video of how my Gelli printing turned into an art journal page.

Doodling, impatiently and quickly in an art journal

Maria McGuire has spent hours and hours and more hours doodling, tangling, and drawing.  I, not so much.  She has, what seems to me, infinite patterns in her mind at all times.  I, not so much.  She is very generous and even took the time to teach me the joys of doodling.  It was like 2 friends getting together over a cup of coffee.  It just happened to be a fabric coffee cup from fabric designed by Jamie Fingal.

When Maria doodles, she goes into a meditative place and carefully, slowly, gently creates patterns. She tried to teach me that.  It didn’t go well.  I’m not a slow and meditative person.  I’m more like Speed Racer.  With wobbly lines.  This doodling took all my patience, using one pattern, the circle.  It took me hours (or at least that is how that 4 minutes felt).

I can doodle.  I can doodle patterns but I have about 6 in my head.  Any more than that takes mighty brain work for me.  Maria has at least a million.  And that is without effort.

But color. Well that is my happy place so I added a bit of color all around the doodles.

And then some more color.  And even a little touch of stenciling.

This is what mine looks like, what does Maria’s doodling look like?

She can doodle on a totally blank page.

She can doodle on top of colors as she did here using one of my newsletter Sparks of Art-spiration.

And she can doodle using a stencil.  She’s designed a whole bunch of stencils with her doodling.   Check out her video here showing you how!

We are both creative, but in different ways.  She is precise and and detail oriented and patient.  I am looser, messier, and definitely not as patient.

And since there are no rules for how to doodle any way you do it is the right way!
