Doodling, impatiently and quickly in an art journal

Maria McGuire has spent hours and hours and more hours doodling, tangling, and drawing.  I, not so much.  She has, what seems to me, infinite patterns in her mind at all times.  I, not so much.  She is very generous and even took the time to teach me the joys of doodling.  It was like 2 friends getting together over a cup of coffee.  It just happened to be a fabric coffee cup from fabric designed by Jamie Fingal.

When Maria doodles, she goes into a meditative place and carefully, slowly, gently creates patterns. She tried to teach me that.  It didn’t go well.  I’m not a slow and meditative person.  I’m more like Speed Racer.  With wobbly lines.  This doodling took all my patience, using one pattern, the circle.  It took me hours (or at least that is how that 4 minutes felt).

I can doodle.  I can doodle patterns but I have about 6 in my head.  Any more than that takes mighty brain work for me.  Maria has at least a million.  And that is without effort.

But color. Well that is my happy place so I added a bit of color all around the doodles.

And then some more color.  And even a little touch of stenciling.

This is what mine looks like, what does Maria’s doodling look like?

She can doodle on a totally blank page.

She can doodle on top of colors as she did here using one of my newsletter Sparks of Art-spiration.

And she can doodle using a stencil.  She’s designed a whole bunch of stencils with her doodling.   Check out her video here showing you how!

We are both creative, but in different ways.  She is precise and and detail oriented and patient.  I am looser, messier, and definitely not as patient.

And since there are no rules for how to doodle any way you do it is the right way!

An index card turns into a mixed media card

This all started by cleaning off my paintbrush.  On an index card.  And then letting it sit on my counter for days (okay weeks – I don’t like to clean…) And then all the sudden, out of the blue it became a card.  And very quickly too!

A piece of paper cut in sloppy scallops and glued to the painty index card.

A quick burst of blue through a stencil by Andrea Matus DeMeng and now the card is coming to life.

A little more blue to the blue birds.  You can never have too much blue in my opinion…

Some pops of color with layers of painted book text and scraps of paper and these scraps on the counter all working together have become a quick mixed media card.  And some proof that there is a great benefit to not cleaning…as if I needed any more fuel for my mission to avoid cleaning…An index card turns into a mixed media card

Video showing different ways you can use a round Gelli Plate as both a mask and for printing! Join me for a Colorful Gelli Print Party!

I went round and round for this month’s Colorful Gelli Print Party!  And that is a great thing!  Why? Because it was so much fun to play with the 4″ round Gelli Plate.

While playing around…who should show up? But a child!  Makes sense since I felt like a little kid myself! And he needs a name…

I might have been playing but I sure learned new ways to use a Gelli Plate!

Watch New Ways I’m Using a Round Gelli Plate on YouTube.

The Gelli Plate was my mask in so many ways!  I stink at making perfect circles all on my own.  But this time I had help and it made it so much easier.

This little guy showed up, but he needs a name!  I have been stumped for some reason, so I’d love to know what you’re thinking he should be called!
