Decided to play around on a scrap of cardboard with Seth Apter's newest stencil

Words inspire me so you bet I was excited to play with Seth Apter’s new stencil, Explore. It’s loaded with words and lots of texture too.  For today’s play, I’m using fancy fancy things…like cardboard from a box, a cosmetic sponge, and old scrapbooking paper.

This is just one of many stops in a blog hop celebrating Seth’s latest stencil release.  You can find all of his new stencils at StencilGirl and there’s a giveaway too! All the details at the end of this post!

An then an OOPS…

Yes, there is an Oops thanks to my impatience in the video.  Every Oops is an opportunity and this is no exception.  Since an Oops is a good thing to me that means impatience is a good thing too, right?  I’ve become very good at rationalizing…

Here are the stages this cardboard scrap went through as I added scrapbooking paper, stenciled on it, stenciled some more, and then scribble journaled.

Couldn't get sharks off the brain so they ended up in my art journal! Captured it all on video too! Inspired by Discovery Channel's Shark Week

What’s swimming around in my head?  Sharks thanks to Discovery Channel’s recent Shark Week.  Brought back all sorts of nostalgia for me since I remember when it all began.  Yes, I’m that old. I am amazed by these creatures…but it’s not like I want to swim with them in the open seas.  I am a big chicken after all.

Whatever is in my head often ends up in my art journal and this was no exception!  Of course, I’m opting for the not-perfectly-scientific-representation of the ocean and sharks…I need my rainbow after all!

Come and join me for a dose of play in this video where I’m sharing about using a fluid paint such as Dylusions with a stencil and how long it takes for some art journal pages to come together…and more!

I remember Shark Week from when I was a kid so I decided to make a video and art journal page in honor of it

The deli paper from cleaning off my stencils.  Instead of running my stencils under water or scrubbing, all I do is immediately blot off any wet paint onto scrap paper or in this case, deli paper.

The stencils I used are from my Layer Me Collection: Pebbles, Iron Grate, and Connected Eyes.

I remember Shark Week from when I was a kid so I decided to make a video and art journal page in honor of itI made my own stencil on card stock by tracing some sharks then cutting it out with an Exacto knife.

You can see how much fun I’ve had with this stencil based on all the spray ink on it.  Paper stencils don’t last forever, even if I coat them with gesso or gel medium, so I tend to only cut simple and quick shapes by hand.

Touches of white create the details on the sharks, and tracing around the edges of them evens out any runny paint.

I used a fineline applicator with white ink in it to create the gills and eyes, and a Stabilo pencil to outline.

Sharks need water, so I added the waves with a fountain pen.  I’m finding fountain pens can take a bit more abuse than felt tipped markers and give me fine details.

For the title, I had green letters.  They were fine, but I wanted pink.  No problem!  I just painted them…with my fingers of course!

With all this color and the silly grins they have, I’m seeing more Jabber Jaw than scary shark in this!

I started with a Gelli print and then built up layers of stencils and simple doodling to create a mixed media paper

Ever have a Gelli print® that leaves you feeling blah?  The kind that are fine or okay…that is such a so-so place to be. I don’t like so-so.  So what do I do?

I say O.O.P.S. This Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly was loaded with opportunity.  If I didn’t care about it, I was free to just play with absolutely no worries about ruining it.  After adding layers of painty pattern with my new Layer Me stencils, I fell in love with that paper!

Want to win all 3 of my newest stencils?  I’ve got a giveaway happening (but it is ending very soon!) and you can find all the details (and how to get a total of 6 chances to win) here.

This is the blah Gelli print® where I started.  It isn’t much now, but it turned out to be the best background for me to add layers of pattern.

This is just 2 layers…but after a bunch more it became very interesting to me thanks to Pebbles, Connected Eyes, and Iron Grate.

When stenciling, I often get messy.  I use lots of paint just so it runs under parts of the stencil.  I like that look, especially when building up layers.

I started with a Gelli print and then built up layers of stencils and simple doodling to create a mixed media paperI took various Posca pens to the page and began coloring in some shapes, tracing others, and followed my impulses to embellish where ever it struck my fancy. This is how an impatient person like me doodles.

The end result?  A big smile on my face and a very busy, patterned paper. I can’t wait to cut it up or rip up into pieces for a page in my art journal!  I started with a Gelli print and then built up layers of stencils and simple doodling to create a mixed media paper
