Love Letter to Venice

A Love Letter to Venice art journal page by Carolyn DubeVenice holds a special place in my heart.  It is one of the most romantic and history filled places I have ever traveled to.  It has been several years since I have been there and I am missing Venice. So, I wrote Venice a love letter.

Clear glass beads over painted text.   I have had the jar of those things for ever- it felt so good to use something that has been neglected for so so long.

This stamp, a part of Maureen Blackman’s Venice collection, was exactly what I needed here.  Serious seamstresses- avert your eyes from the horrible stitching (that I quite like).

The notebook paper was drenched in spray inks and then lots of water to get that great color.  Not surprisingly, cheap paper rips when wet.  At first I thought it was a mistake, but then I realized it was just an oops.  Turned out that I liked the rip and how it looked.   I never would have ripped it there on purpose but I like what it did so next time I may rip it there on purpose.

Writing over the wrinkled paper- well, it didn’t go well.  I don’t love my handwriting anyway and when I added the wrinkled challenge- well, let’s just say oops.  I actually kept scratching over it with a very fine tipped pen and in the end I like it!  I actually like my handwriting- a big deal for me!

You where I’d like to go on my next trip.  Do you have a favorite vacation spot that you miss?

Wonderful page! I like the distressed look of your paper and how you’ve blended the colors together. The image is perfect for the theme of Venice! Never been there myself, but it’s on my “to do” list! I spotted your work on MIM.

I think it looks fun! The scratchy handwriting works well! Happy week.

That’s gorgeous! I love how the notebook paper looks like an old plastered wall. And that’s a super fun–and very effective–way to incorporate your handwriting. Like writing on the wall!! 😉

Me? I miss camping at First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach, VA. I haven’t been there in several years. *sigh* Miss it.

your wonderful background paper looks like a very old frescoed wall in Italy-perfect for your page! Venice was one of my very favorite European cities and I hope to visit again too-this time with hubby in tow. Of course, I really miss spending time with the family I have in France…

I love your page and I love Venice too! There’s something awesome about seeing boats moored up out the back of people’s apartments.

    Thanks for linking up!

You had me a “Venice”. I’ve always wanted to go there and tour Italy. Someday. In the meantime, I’ll have to live through your memories. This came out beautiful.. Small touches.. Big results.

Love the sentiment and the resulting artwork! I too loved Venice. Even though we had a tight schedule ( a plane to catch in London), after driving some distance, we turned back to Venice for just one more night:)
Thank you for taking part in Mandarin Orange Monday:)

Love this page in general, Carolyn, but specifically I love that vintage look created by your well-drenched inks against that spiral notebook paper from my childhood (also vintage!). I totally understand the longing for places that have been the venue for happy times in our past. The Finger Lakes (aka wine) region of New York State does it for me. Russ and were just there this month and loved it! A bit more accessible than Venice, perhaps!

The wrinkled pages really do it for me…somehow reminding me of the crumbling water soaked architecture that is Venice. Lucky you to have gone there…..and it shows in your letter of love.

  • Lena March 26, 2013, 10:58 am

Lovely page and a great idea – I still haven’t been to Venice. IF/when I go I hope to bring a lot of romantic memories too…:-)

  • aga March 26, 2013, 1:53 pm

Dear Carolyn, it is the most beautiful love letter to Venice which I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing.

Just stumbled onto your video on an art blog. Just love the video of you and your husband. You two are too funny together. How I envy you that. Now how about telling me where to get those darling little plastic stencils?! Is there somewhere I can order online? Have subscribed to your NEWSLETTER. Can’t wait.

    • Carolyn March 26, 2013, 5:06 pm

I get most of my stencils from here – http://shrsl.com/?~3913 – all the ones I used in the video are by Crafter’s Workshop.

Love the “letter-idea” and the wrinkeling…the stamp in the bottom is a beautiful eyecatcher indeed 🙂 I can feel how you love venice 🙂 xox Conny

I love the handwriting and have to remember that scratching it over can result in this… it looks so intentional! And I’m totally digging the rips and wrinkles. As for favorite places to go… Venice is right up there. We went last year for the first time and hope someday to return. It was magical.

  • Rinda March 27, 2013, 11:55 pm

I love this – the letter idea is perfect on the crumbled paper. Venice holds a special place in my heart, too. We loved our trip there, and I took the BEST pictures.
