Let’s Play with Punchinella from the Hardware Store

Video tutorial using supplies from the hardware store with a Gelli Plate® in an art journal for the Let's Play link party

The punchinella that I found at the hardware store for this week’s Let’s Play video and link party isn’t officially punchinella but it sure works like it.  Punchinella is the leftover part when sequins are manufactured.  Usually mylar and shiny.  But I actually prefer this drywall tape to official punchinella.

Why do I like it better?  It comes in giant rolls for almost nothing and it takes paint beautifully.  Most importantly, it encourages me to play because there is no wrong way to use it since I am already not using it for home construction as the manufacturer expected.

Video tutorial using supplies from the hardware store with a Gelli Plate® in an art journal for the Let's Play link partyI took a short cut in coloring the drywall tape.  I could have used a brush to put the paint on but instead, I used a Gelli Plate®.  So not only did I get the tape painted quickly but I also captured patterns and started building up a background in an art journal and on book text for future play.

This art journal page had a few Oopsies in it and I just have to laugh at myself about one of them- okay all of them!  And if you’re wondering if this page is finished…be sure to check out the very end of the video.

Curious about how to give yourself permission to play?  I’ve got a free workshop all about that here.

Here are the supplies I used. Some of these links are affiliate links which means I get a small percentage. It doesn’t cost you anything extra and you are helping me keep this blog and my videos ad free! Thank you- I don’t like ads any more than you do!

A great big thank you to Adrienne Wimbush for sharing a link to this stuff which is called joint tape – she got it at Lowe’s!

I love all what you do and I hadn’t thought of using the Geli plate in this way.

Your videos are always so inspirational. I don’t always feel like playing, and if I’m particularly blue, you always make things pink . . . with sparkles!!! xoxoxo

I’ve never seen this kind of drywall tape. Gonna have to look for some.

Becky P, I love your embossed yupo paper! The colors you used are stunning. Did you use alcohol inks?

Carolyn, I love the enthusiasm you bring to all your projects and videos! You’ve inspired me to make a trip to the hardware store today!

Wow, Carolyn! I think that I really prefer your style of punchinella to the fabric store variety. Your hardware store ingredient is now on my shopping list for arting and crafting. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for this great adventure. I now have drywall tape at the top of my list, and I am sure a lot of people do now thanks to you. I am really excited to go get some, maybe this afternoon would be good time to go. Thank you Carolyn, you are always an inspiration.

Found the Dry Wall Tape at (The Hyde Store ) on line it was $7.99 per 75 Foot Roll they have a flat rate of $7.99 one or four rolls so if you have others that want some might be a good idea to order together.

Gosh, it’s been a while since I played with you. Our drywall tape is much more of a grid pattern but I have stamped with it and used it for texture. Am so going to throw some paint at it. Love Sarah’s funny quotes. Hugz

Love the painted drywall tape – wonder what would happen if it was cut into shapes? Polka dot rabbit?

  • Corrine March 30, 2016, 3:06 pm

There is nothing you won’t try and this is fun too. Great create date the other day, looking forward to next month. Stitching fingers whirring away. Project one done and in the shop, going to shoot for 3 a week. That will be some play.

I too came across this amazing tape. Love the idea of gelli plating them.

I see a trip to the local paint store coming soon. 🙂

Your enthusiasm is magnetic. I feel that I have been let loose. You have given me permission to just try anything and everything. Up until now I have been limited by feeling guilty at “wasting“ expensive art supplies just to play. But your attitude has helped me see that playing is one of the most important parts to creativity. I`ve even used my precious soft pastels recently while following one of your videos. The pastels are wonderful and intense and can be mixed into a bunch of different mediums (even glue) and applied in all kinds of different ways from brushes to stamps and on and on. Thanks for encouraging the fun and tossing out the worries of getting it perfect. Keep on doing the good work. It really is helping a lot of us out here. Cheers, D

Liked your speaking style, well done. I usually search for my “invented” supplies where ever I might me. But had not thought of the Hardware store. I am assuming it could be the same as Home Depot or Lowes but will see.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have to go play now!
