Herding Bunny Rabbits

I had a plan for this Artsy Fartsy Friendly Fun challenge.  Maria McGuire and I are using the Gelli Plate, oil pastels and a die cut.  Pop on over to her blog to see what she created!

I was so proud that I had a plan.  I knew exactly what I was going to create for this challenge.  It involved fabric.   It was a great plan.   Things don’t always go as planned and this was no exception.

I thought I was going to use some of the fabric I printed…nope.  This scrap paper that I cleaned my brayer off on and picked the last bits of paint off the Gelli Plate yodeled, yes it yodeled, to me so this is where I started.

It was in the last part of the video.

I grabbed one of Sherrie JD’s fabulous Pulp Dreams digital goodies I had printed a while back.  One thing I love about digital is you can print it any size you want!

I painted in the speech bubble.

A touch of blue oil pastel here and there.

Lately,my life has felt like I have been herding bunny rabbits.  Cute and friendly but not very obedient and can scratch at you if you don’t handle them correctly…so I reached for Tracie Lyn Huskamp’s bunny stencil.

The white was just too plain for me so I reached for my Twinkling H2O’s.  These are totally risk free on the paint because if I didn’t like it I could just use a wet brush to wipe them off.   I went a bit light the first time over it so I easily added a bit more on the backs of the bunnies.  Twinkling H2O’s are so forgiving!

A few finishing touches and my art journal page was complete!

As this week unfolded I continued to think about the  security prompt from Fall Fearless and Fly.  My sense of security too often comes from a sense that I am in control of what happens.  The reality is I only control how I respond.  These bunny rabbits I’ve been herding have really taught me a lesson because some bunnies that I thought were cute and wonderful turned on me unexpectedly.  Not a great feeling but I will master the art of herding bunny rabbits…

I know this is going to be a great week! Why? Because of all the fabulous creativity in it!  Check out Maria’s take on the Artsy Fartsy Friendly Fun challenge, Fall Fearless and Fly, my  bunnies begged me to do them in orange to be a part of Mandarin Orange Monday, Creative Every Day Month, and Inspire Me Monday!

I love the whimsy of your piece. It is fascinating to read about other’s creative process. That’s Bette, from the Archie comic strip, right?

like your artwork, but have never been too fond of those unpredictable bunnies.

  • Sarah November 19, 2012, 2:36 am

You have such cool supplies – I am intrigued by twinkling H20’s!

Great work though – the only thing on a par to herding bunnies is herding cats. Although cats can sometimes be bribed with food 🙂

With five dogs I feel like I am herding something all the time, and we even have two rabbits! Love your thinking here about how life is chaos and it’s how we react to it and be in it. Great process on the page fabric or not! Got to get n my Fall Fearless page! Have a tranquil day. xox

Love your Gelli fun… the backgrounds are awesome. Sorry you met a bad bunny. That bites.

  • Anoeska November 19, 2012, 9:46 am

I just love your pages, I adore the rabbits. It was great seeing how you use the gelli print, as I didn’t know what it is exactly…

Fabulous journal page. I want that Gelli plat! 🙂 It’s awesome. Thanks for sharing your video. 🙂

  • Maria McGuire November 19, 2012, 11:28 am

Glad that it didn’t go as planned because you would have never gotten what you did otherwise. I love how this background turned out from the Gelli Plate. I love the digi image you picked and incorporated the rabbits–super fun and funky! I cannot wait to see what happens with that fabric! Thank you for motivating me to make art and doing these challenges–makes my soul happy!

Never tried to herd bunnies, but I have tried to herd some scratching, biting kittens. About as bad, I suspect.

Of course, this journal page gave me quite a laugh. Loved it, although I still can’t see your videos. I’m just glad you show each step, so I don’t feel clueless, like a helpless bunny!

  • Nigel November 19, 2012, 11:57 am

Brilliant page, reminds me of a spoof video on youtube about cat herders 🙂

  • Jessica November 19, 2012, 1:14 pm

Love this and your process too. Awesome stencil!! I would like to know more about what you used to make it. I use an exacto knife and rounded edges are very hard to make. xo

    • Carolyn November 19, 2012, 1:21 pm

The exclamation point stencil was done on a Silhouette cutting machine. Just used a font and made the exclamation points different sizes and turned them in various ways.

  • Judy Shea November 19, 2012, 4:03 pm

Bad bunny. They have such cute wiggly noses though. I love that you are having a ball with the gelli plate. Great outcome. Never heard of the Silhouette machine. I don’t want to know about it. (fingers in ears…lalalala).

  • Rita McGregor November 19, 2012, 4:07 pm

That gelli plate looks like great fun! Love what you were creating and how you got every bit out of it you could–awesome! 🙂 I have never tried to herd bunnies, but I bet it is similar to herding kittens–LOL! 😉

  • Nancy Lee November 19, 2012, 5:31 pm

Yes. Is the answer to your question. I taught first and second grade and four year olds for 33 years…. Just say “It is time for lunch.” And the “wild bunnies go everywhere!!”
So now I am trying something new..mixed media. Love to follow your blog.

  • Lori November 19, 2012, 11:32 pm

  • Jenny Petricek November 20, 2012, 11:42 am

Hi Carolyn! Good to be visiting you here today!:-) I absolutely adore this project…as an owner of guinea pigs for most of my life, I love anything having to do with bunnies or other pocket pets!

Also, I love how you took the time to share the process, step-by-step, with us! I learn so much from this! Keep up the great work!:-)

  • Mari Carmen November 20, 2012, 3:54 pm

Of course, not! I think it must be a very hard work! Anyway, your work is lovely, Carolyn! 🙂

  • Denni November 20, 2012, 7:58 pm

    Hi Carolyn,
Love the gelli video, makes me want to gelli right now! Great bunny piece! I feel your distress, with my kids it totally feels like herding bunnies. I have a dog and cat under foot as well. Herding seems to be my occupation.

If I don’t get back here before Thursday, Have a great Thanksgiving!

  • Rinda November 23, 2012, 1:26 am

We talk about “herding cats” in my profession.

This page really appeals to me…my generation, growing up in the 50’s! I love the concept, I can see you trying to catch all the bunnies jumping around, and your eventual plan and how to get them under control! Thanks so much to for all the links to products, instructions, and the video, too!

  • Jo (fiddlesnips) November 25, 2012, 2:18 pm

Fun piece! I have one bunny rabbit and catching her can be quite a task!
