Why I Love When Dylusions Paints Get Thick

Why I love it when Dylusions paints get thick!

The colors I use most often of the Dylusions paints have become thicker right in the jar.  We can talk about all the possible reasons the water evaporates but the biggest one is I leave the lids off for extended periods of time.  I’m working on getting better about it…but if I never get better about it…my life will still feel complete.

Some of the water evaporating turned out to be an OOPS…an Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly.  I love the creamy feel of the paint when it is brand new but I like it thicker even more!  Why?  Because it makes my life much easier.

Thicker paint is easier to stencil with if you are in a hurry or just impatient like me.  I can get crisp lines on highly detailed stencils without having to be careful.  That’s a big plus to me!

Watch Why I love it when dylusions paints getting thick on YouTube.

With those wide mouth jars, it is easy to reach in with a cosmetic sponge or brush and use up every last drop of paint so not a drop of pigment gets wasted like in the more traditional skinny tubes and jars.

It is just water evaporating so that means if I don’t want it quite as thick, all I need to do is add water.  Even that is easy with the Dylusions.  All I do is hit it with a few squirts of water and screw on the lid when I am done to replace any water that has evaporated.  I don’t even bother to mix it in because magically by the next day it is all absorbed.

Thanks Dyan for creating such a fun paint that works for all sorts of artful play!

Here are the supplies I used. Some of these links are affiliate links which means I get a small percentage. It doesn’t cost you anything extra and you are helping me keep this blog and my videos ad free! Thank you- I don’t like ads any more than you do!

The thickness never bothered me…I know a lot of folks sent theirs back, but I kept mine.

For many of us they arrived thick and Ranger made some changes with pink and purple. Ranger sent me replacements. Ranger stands behind their products. You are the first and only artist to discuss this. It was problematic for me until yesterday when I wanted a non opaque paint. With your help I now will use them and even try them with water on Gelli plates.

I saw a video with Dyan who said if your paints get thick, all you have to do is spray a bit of water in the jar. She said the water has just evaporated and just needs a bit of water to rejuvenate the paint. She said the color will not change when water is added. I’ve had my paints for quite some time and they are still like new. Thanks.

I’m so glad to find this explanation on the viscosity of Dylusions paints. I just discovered some of mine had gotten thick and then yesterday, a customer asked about the same thing happening to hers that she bought 6 months ago, but had just finally opened. I’m glad my solution was right on! Thanks for yours!

Hello Carolyn: I’ve been feeling rotten lately, and so have not been able to play lately. But I’ll be back at it hopefully soon.
I have never tried Dylusions before. I might have to add some of these to my Creative Wish List!
    🙂

Although I do not own these paints (yet), I am going to file this bit of info in my brain data bank in case I need it someday! Thanks for the tip!

I’m one of those who is not fond of the thickening paints. Mine haven’t just thickened, they’ve coalesced into a ball of… goop. I have a complete collection and most of my jars have only been opened long enough to create a color swatch. I’ve done the water spritzing to no avail. I never let my jars sit open, I use a pallet knife to scoop some out onto my work surface then close the jar right up. It doesn’t help. I have paints that are 15-20 years old and have not thickened or dried out in their bottles. If the wide opening is the cause of the issue they should be re-packaged. They are amazing paints… which is why this is so disappointing.
