Creating a Pattern that Never Ends for Stencil Week

Video tutorial using Open Buildings Stencil in an art journal by Carolyn Dube

Stencil videos and giveaways during Stencil Week with Carolyn Dube

Thank you for being a part of my week long play with my newest stencils at StencilGirl!  I have been blown away by the reaction and support!  Thank you to each and every one of you!

Open Buildings Stencil by Carolyn Dube for StencilGirl Products

On to today’s play!  Just because Open Buildings is a 6 x 6 stencil doesn’t mean it is only for small papers- creating a pattern that never ends !  This  stencil can cover any size paper or project without any careful measuring.  If you’ve seen many of my videos you probably know, I don’t measure very often.  Eyeballing is so much more fun!

This finished journal page is not perfect. Nor does it have to be.  This was play. A chance to be free and creative.  My artsy friends get that and they get me.  Being able to connect with creatives means so much to me.

Then I had a flash…an idea that felt right to my heart and my head.

I decided to start a community to provide a place for people to share their creativity, in whatever form it takes. This community is for everyone from beginners to masters. Where is this community?  On Google+

Come and join me as I learn this Google+ thing.  We’ll learn the technical stuff together and I’ll be posting tutorials along the way to help us all!  If you click here it will take you to the Colorful Playground community.  Just click on the join community button and you’re in!  As you can guess, Stencil Week is keeping me quite busy so you’re getting a first look at the community.  Stay tuned because I have several things up my sleeve for next week at  A Colorful Playground!

How to join the Google+ community, A Colorful Playground

Click here to watch Art journal play with paint and a stencil on YouTube.

The giveaway is now closed.

Want to win the stencil I used in this project?  I am giving away one of these stencils to a randomly selected winner!  To be entered all you need to do is leave a comment telling me what video you would like me to make in the near future.

Want another chance to win?  Just share it (Facebook, Google Plus, Pinterest, Twitter, etc.) and come back and leave another comment telling me where you shared it!

I’ll be announcing all the randomly selected winners from Stencil Week next Friday, Jan. 31st. right here.  Be sure to be entered before random.org  picks the winners for your chance to win!  And yes, international folks are eligible too!

Got myself some Gelatos and have been playing with them so a video on using stencils and Gelatos would be great. Really love the colour variations and tones you got with mixing the paints on the stencil! Love the white journalling too!! Off to share!

I am really enjoying your new designs! This one is really unique. I love a strong geometric and this sure fits that bill! For video, I would love to see you playing with your new stencils and your gelli plate. I love the gelli plate and think you could get some cool results!

Gorgeous stencil – just the sort of thing I would use a lot! And what a fabulous idea to start a Google+ community. I’m in 🙂

  • Rebeca López January 22, 2014, 4:35 am

Morning! I am very new at this, and I love that you make it look really easy 😉 I have trouble with mixing colours! I either use always the same combo or end up with something really dark although my initial colours were very bright… I would appreciate any help on how you choose colours or what combinations are no good!
I shared on Pinterest (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/24910604163376417/) that I think goes to my facebook too! Thanks again for the chance to win!

  • Susan Johnson January 22, 2014, 8:59 am

I love how you just go with the flow in your videos. I always smile while watching you. I have to agree with Rebeca, it is so hard to know which colors will blend or look good together an not make mud. Not that mud cannot be a good oops, but mostly it isn’t.

  • Corrine January 22, 2014, 9:23 am

Great new stencil……you are one talented lady and I love how the pattern is endless in it’s uses and can hold so much within it. xox

You have a very fun inviting way to you and it just takes away the nervousness of trying something new and making an OOPS! …..and not worrying about it. hehe Love this one and how you used a smaller stencil on a large page and just going with it, all the while mixing colors and making it fabulous. Thanks for ALL your videos, I am inspired by each and every one of them. Keep up the good work! :0)

Love, love the buildings stencil — can’t resist patterns of squares and rectangles!
Often the videos I like the best are the ones I would have thought I wasn’t especially interested in — go figure. (But Gelatos and stencils would be a good combo!!)

  • Barbara Albrecht January 22, 2014, 8:48 pm

Your videos always pleasantly surprise me. I’d love to see another oops transformed! 🙂

  • Heather B. January 22, 2014, 10:15 pm

Love the video- I’d like some guidance on being a newbie to gelli plate and stencils. In my first go around my designs got a bit muddled. Most of my stencils are 6×6- and although I like a lot of patterns individually- they don’t seem to work together and get muddled. I’ve been practicing on the smaller gelli plate but I also have the 8×11. Maybe compositions would change on a larger starter surface. Any ideas? I also found that-I think its the third print- the one off the back of the first stencil print doesn’t usually give me much of anything- it just stays stuck to the stencil or not much transfer. I’m just going to play through it but any advice is helpful.

    • Carolyn Dube January 23, 2014, 11:47 am

The best thing to do is play and experiment. I’ve got Gelli Printing videos for the Colorful Gelli Printing Party that might help. You can find the tab at the very top of the blog for it. Also, everyone uses the Gelli Plate differently- it is like a paintbrush to me so explore try crazy stuff and see what calls to you.

  • Heather B. January 22, 2014, 10:18 pm

Posted to Facebook and to pinterest as well. Thanks for sharing all your thoughts on being impatient, frugal, and making happy accidents.

  • taradid January 22, 2014, 10:59 pm

I just found your blog through the Stencil Girl website (also new to me), so I don’t have any video suggestions yet. I have just started working my way through what you have already made and I think that is going to keep me busy for a while!

  • Barbara Backer January 22, 2014, 11:16 pm

Any video showing “out of the box” uses for regular media — like today’s post showing “other” ways to use your stencil. I don’t know that I would have thought to fill the whole page with the small stencil, or to turn the stencil different ways. And the post on your new Google+ page of the same stencil with different media. I like ALL of your variations on ways to use materials. BTW–of course I’ve joined the new community.

  • Wanda Hentges January 22, 2014, 11:18 pm

  • Heather B. January 24, 2014, 9:33 pm

I thought of a new video, topic/question—- how did you make the change to go from elementary school teacher to a mixed media artist full time? How does one become a stencil designer (or other craft material designer)? Do you manufacture your own products or source it out? The StencilGirl website — looks like a great group of people— did you all contribute to each other’s journey to make, promote, etc . your designs? I have a love for doing creative endeavors and I’m curious how to make the connections to expand it from my hobby to something more significant.

  • butterfliecrafter January 27, 2014, 6:02 am

I don’t own gelatos yet, but am considering buying some, so a video on them would be nice. But any video is great, because it’s always so much fun watching and inspiring to go to my studio and play some myself.

  • Marjie Kemper January 29, 2014, 6:19 pm
