Stencil Test Drive with Random Squares

Random Squares Stencil by Jessica Sporn at Stencil Girl

Random Squares by Jessica Sporn

Welcome to the latest Stencil Test Drive!  I’m working with Jessica Sporn’s Random Squares stencil.  The first time I saw this stencil, I knew I had to have it!  So many possibilities!  Be sure to stop by and check out what everyone did with this stencil!

I’ve been seeing the word vulnerable in all sorts of places lately so it was no surprise to me that it ended up in my art journal.  There is strength in knowing you are vulnerable and embracing all that it entails.  As woman emerged, she struck me as strong and the type who embraces her vulnerabilities.

In the comments, I was asked where I got the paper doll.  I have all sorts of paper doll books that I have amassed over the years but no idea which one this particular lady came from…  They are extremely affordable especially considering how many ways you can use them!  Here are links to a few different ones.

She came out great. I love the use of the sticky back to make her banner, great idea Carolyn…Pink yum, turquoise yum, lovely vulnerable melting on this frigid day. xox

Stunning! I love your colors — no surprise there, and the juxtaposition of strength, vulnerability and, dare I say it, SEXY! Thank you for driving my stencil girlfriend!

  • Danielle January 24, 2013, 7:27 am

Oh I love this stencil and what you did with the figure.

  • Maggie Nemetz January 24, 2013, 8:45 am

I love the unexpected shades of violet, green and blue you used in this journal page! It looks so exuberant! And makes being vulnerable a good thing rather than a negative thing 🙂

Thank you for describing the materials you used as well as listing them. I’d never heard of sticky back canvas ~ it looks like so much fun to work with! Gotta get me some!!

  • Diana Trout January 24, 2013, 9:01 am

Very cool use of the stencil. The figure worked out so well.

  • Judy Shea January 24, 2013, 9:04 am

What a nice way to start my morning. Great video and I love the way you put that splash of pink stencil with the green and blue. Love the idea of the blow up of the figure then cutting it out. Hey, cut it out.. ha.

It’s so great to be able to see the process – I love how carefree you are with your materials! The raised banner is such a cool and unique addition.

She came out beautifully, Carolyn! I love it. I love your idea of using a paper doll and cutting it out and applying it to the composition. And I loved watching her emerge from your creativity, and I love how much you clearly were enjoying yourself all through the entire process to the finished page. I also love what you wrote about there being strength in our vulnerability – I agree. This is wonderful, and I’m inspired to try this soon, too. Thanks for sharing!

Oops! I forgot to add that I love Jessica’s Random Squares stencil. I’m only a newbie to stencils (as you know), but I am drawn to them – I like the freedom and sense of play they offer. Great stuff! I’m off now to have a look at Jessica’s website/blog to see what other stencils she has (besides this brilliant one) and maybe buy more than one while I’m there. Thanks again!

  • Jo Murray January 24, 2013, 1:09 pm

    That stencil makes wonderful backgrounds.

  • Aloquin January 24, 2013, 2:11 pm

This entry is fantastic… the “Vulnerable” banner MAKES it! I’ve seen lots of journal pages, but this banner is something new. Great job!

  • Maria McGuire January 24, 2013, 2:14 pm

FANTASTIC video. I had the best coffee break right now. The stencil is very versatile. I love how as random as it is you used it even more random. Great word to pick. LOVE how you didn’t dry her and just went about your business 🙂

  • valerie-jael January 24, 2013, 2:51 pm

Great page. Love the colours, and of course the pink lady. Valerie

  • Claudette January 24, 2013, 3:40 pm

Love it! You are awesome. That is all.

  • Nancy Lee January 24, 2013, 3:51 pm

Super job! I like the way you give “us” a video with pictures and blow by blow plays of how it was done! Thanks for sharing your love of stencils!

  • Sandra L. January 24, 2013, 5:30 pm

Great video! Thank you very much. I may have to get one of those stencils.
I also wanted to ask you: where did you find a paper doll? I haven’t seen them since I was a kid.
Do you remember Betsy McCall, in McCall’s Magazine, BTW? Used to love her!

    • Carolyn January 24, 2013, 6:19 pm

I put the links to several paper doll books in the post above. I wish I could remember which one it originally came from but I don’t. My dolls are all cut apart and separated from their original books.

  • Kay Wallace January 24, 2013, 6:58 pm

I have yet to use “sticky-back canvas,” but now totally understand why I need it! I just love your banner title, how you adjusted the silhouette to “strut,” and the colors you have chosen…feminine, yet strong! I love the juxtaposition of that with the title VULNERABLE! Well done!

  • Boo January 24, 2013, 8:29 pm

Hi Carolyn. First of; thank you so much for allways sharing so generously 🙂 I LOVE to watch the videos – this was no exception!! I watched your play with the Gelli Plate with great interest. Here in Denmark we can’t buy them – and not everybody ships to DK. I did get my hand on the two smaller sizes though and I’m in love (like everybody else 🙂 🙂 🙂 ) I see that yoy and a lot of other people share your work with “the plate” on Pinterest. Can I ask how you post it there?? I would love to share some of my work/play also… I think it’s great fun to find inspiration in other peoples work 🙂 Thank you so much and have a great weekend.

Isn’t it funny how sometimes a word will keep appearing to us in random ways like you mentioned that the word vulnerable was showing up for you. I like how it came to you to make this journal page in a way that vulnerable is not a threatening word but rather a word to be embraced. I love the stencil and I can’t get over how creative all of you test drivers are. Great work.

  • Faye January 25, 2013, 4:38 pm

Carolyn, this is gorgeous and a wonderful way to use the stencil. I can see why you were so eager to get this stencil. It is so versatile. Paper dolls. Does anyone besides the Dover Publications people even make them any more? I grew up with paper dolls, even making my own and their clothes.

  • Tracey Fletcher King January 25, 2013, 7:49 pm

great video and I like that you are providing links to the products you are using as well… makes it so easy to find out about them…xx

  • Alicia January 25, 2013, 8:34 pm

wow — I really think my fave part of this is announcing VULNERABLE!! with such aplomb – not just through the sign, but through the brave purple people pose!! masterful 😀

  • Dave Dubé January 25, 2013, 9:54 pm

Are we related? ;O) I’d like to think so!

  • minnemie January 25, 2013, 11:49 pm

I love your thoughts about being vulnerable… and totally agree! Great journal page and stenciling to accompany your thoughts too!

  • Anne January 26, 2013, 5:34 am

Lovely, pretty color range and a wonderful message! Obviously very inspiring stencil! 🙂

  • Gina Sismilich January 26, 2013, 11:06 am

What a gorgeous page!!! I love everything about it – the color, the woman, the “theme” of embracing your vulnerability. Happy PPF

  • Lynn Cohen January 26, 2013, 1:03 pm

Well I totally totally enjoyed watching your video! I am amazed at how much thought goes into such a journal page. When I draw I just draw, I do not think about how I am going to do it, or why, I just do! Such different processes, but both obviously so enjoyable ! HPPF! Oh, and yes, I loved your outcome!

  • giggles January 26, 2013, 5:27 pm

I love this piece sooo much. I have been using that word a lot…not in reference to me but to others…Love the stencil too…and the colors…it’s just so yummy all around! Thanks for sharing this great process!!

What fun to take something others use and do your own thing with it. Like taking pictures with a camera everyone will see something different. Love what you came up with. The banner was clever. HPPF
