Sealing PanPastels with a Spray Ink? Yes!

This was a total accident, an Oops of the best kind, that led to this discovery!  As I ran around the house, shouting Eureka, my family just looked at me like I was a crazy woman….But I know you will understand the glee I felt when I realized thatbthe Color Bloom spray ink was sealing PanPastels in my art journal!

This only works with the Color Bloom spray inks.  I don’t know the chemistry behind it but I know it works!  Check out the video and you’ll see that the PanPastels are sealed so well that I can rub a white tissue over it!

Watch You can Seal PanPastels with Color Bloom Spray Ink on YouTube.

I played with my Scribble Scratch stencil and a cut out of a person on the 6×6 Gelli Plate to create the base of this art journal page.  Then smeared left over paint all around.  And then it sat and waited patiently until now.

I can get a watercolor-y run when I don’t rub the PanPastels in and add lots of Color Bloom spray ink.

All of these words are from the Uplifting Words stencil.

I can rub in the PanPastel and get a different look.  The lines are crisper and I don’t need as much spray ink to seal it.

Now I have 2 ways that I really like for sealing Pan Pastels in my art journal!  A few months ago,  a friend showed me how to use the Gelli Plate and gel medium to seal PanPastels.  You can see the video I made showing Mary Anne’s technique here.

So why did I choose these words for this page?  This honors the courage of several women new to art journaling that I worked with recently at a private event.  Allowing yourself to be creative is such a vulnerable place, especially for those who have hidden their creative sides for so long.

What other products would “normally” be used to seal Pan Pastels? TFS!

Nice. But how would you seal just the color blooms spray ink.

    • Carolyn Dube May 22, 2014, 11:02 am

I don’t sell my art journals so I don’t seal them the way you might a canvas or framed art.

Yes indeed! I really liked the thought behind this page Carolyn! “I am vulnerable” really does sum up the conflict in hearts when it comes to displaying your art for the first time or even in general! It really is a peak into ourselves that you may or may not want to share for various reasons. For me, getting over the hump of “it’s ok to be me,” no matter what that may reflect in my art to others, took a little while and a big leap of faith! It is hard to be that “open,” but there is also a huge amount of liberation in it all! Thank you for this page and the encouragement to others!

Great idea! So it doesn’t smll, right? Because that’s what I hate about traditional fixative! Does it add a whitish tint, or just a shimmer?

  • Carolyn Dube May 22, 2014, 12:24 pm

No smell at all that I have noticed and it adds shimmer. I haven’t noticed an whitish tint. Hope that helps!

Love your page. I love it when you discover something by accident. Great time with the spray ink.

Carolyn thank you for yet another great video. Love your adventures and discoveries. There is a non-smelly fixative I use on my pan pastels named Spectra Fix.. so if you don’t want shiny finish you might consider this. I got it at Dick Blick.

Very cool, Carolyn! Is the Color Bloom Spray Inks Acrylic based? If so, that is probably why there is a “sealing” effect. But this all makes me wonder if I put some thinned Fluid Matte Medium in a spray bottle would I get the same effect as the Color Bloom Spray?
I may give it a try!!

    Regards,
    Francine Rossoni

No idea about the chemistry of the spray – just know it reacts to water. Let me know how your experiments with fluid matte medium work out!

  • Wanda Hentges May 23, 2014, 5:55 pm

    Way cool!!!!!!!

    Another great video!

When you get a chance would you do another video on Open acrylics showing ways you have used them. Also I would like to see another on high flow acrylics. Thanks so much.
