Play Dates: Burying Spray Inks that Bleed

Video Play Dates Spray Ink edition Burying Dylusions Spray Ink that Bleeds with Carolyn DubeSome spray inks bleed and that can be a very useful thing.  I’m burying the Dylusions spray inks and creating a softer, aged feeling as it bleeds through the gesso.

Thank you for sharing your play time. Love learning new techniques. I hope you have a great Wednesday!

    • Boo September 24, 2014, 7:32 am

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. My dylusions have been sitting in a drawer
because I work in an art journal 90% of the time and I kept making mud out of them. Or they’d run and look horrible when I added my next layer. I can’t wait to try the gesso on top. I love the idea of the color and words peaking through the gesso.

This playdate thing is sooooo fun. This is exactly how I learn things when my friends come to visit. Thanks!!!

      • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 10:13 am

They will run through just about anything you put on top but if you add a layer of gesso or white paint it creates the coolest looks in an art journal Boo!

  • Cassie @ For the Art of It September 24, 2014, 12:22 am

Of course I’d love that stencil! I pinned it just the other day onto my Christmas wish list!
Do most spray inks work this way – bleeding through?

    thanks!

    • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 10:14 am

It depends…some do and some don’t. Dylusions bleeds the best/most of any that I play with Cassie.

  • Cassie @ For the Art of It September 24, 2014, 12:23 am

    pinned it!

  • Edie September 24, 2014, 1:53 am

Favorite tip? Point the nozzle toward the paper, not your glasses. True story.

    • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 10:15 am

LOL Edie! That is a very good point!

  • muriel September 24, 2014, 2:27 am

Another great video! I am amazed the ink does not bleed more with the gesso. Next time I put gesso on my ink I’ll let it dry longer.

    • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 10:19 am

The trick is to let it dry before the gesso and it won’t smear Muriel.

  • Alice September 24, 2014, 2:29 am

Love the stencil! I am burying lots of stuff under gesso, I love the way that it tones down colors and when I apply it with a babywipe it gives a whitewash kinda look to the page. I was scared to try this with Dylusions, but now I see that it works too! Thank you!

  • Melissa September 24, 2014, 2:33 am

I have a question instead of a comment. Does it matter what brand if gesso?

    • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 8:26 am

I am not a gesso snob in any way…it should work with any brand Melissa!

  • April Lopez September 24, 2014, 7:54 am

i am enjoying these videos. I’m learning a lot about sprays. They are all so very different.

  • Nancy Lefko September 24, 2014, 8:00 am

Love using spray inks with stencils…did just that yesterday 🙂 Thanks for the opportunity to win.

  • Tanya Phenis September 24, 2014, 8:07 am

Huh, how interesting and who’da thought!! 🙂 I would LOVE that stencil! Thanks for sharing!

  • Delores Azary September 24, 2014, 8:20 am

Love it! Thanks for the play date!

  • libby September 24, 2014, 9:16 am

I love the bright punch of color you get from the dylusion sprays…but your grasp technique opens a whole new world..can’t wait to try it

  • Sylvia Tabor September 24, 2014, 9:39 am

I adore Dylusions because of their vibrancy. I have many water pens filled with Dylusions just so I can paint/color with them.

    • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 10:20 am

They are one super ink that can do so many different things!

  • Joni September 24, 2014, 9:53 am

I can’t wait to try this out. I always hate to waste the ink that’s leftover on the stencil, and now I know what to do with it! Thanks.

    • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 10:21 am

Some of my favorite things come from the leftover inks Joni!

  • Michele (Princess Buttercup) September 24, 2014, 9:58 am

Love your tutorial, Carolyn! I would love to win Rembrandt’s Words!

  • Kristy Tyra September 24, 2014, 10:16 am

    Love your work, Carolyn!

  • Judy M September 24, 2014, 10:23 am

After collecting several colors of the Dylusions spray inks I decided I didn’t like them because they were messy, they changed when I put other mediums on top, or the results came out muddy. Thanks for these videos presenting different brands of spray inks and their different properties. I’m excited to try Dylusions again, especially with this gesso technique.

  • RuthL September 24, 2014, 11:02 am

    Wonderful idea Carolyn!

  • Tasha F September 24, 2014, 11:19 am

I love my Dylusions sprays! My tip…I was running out of Lemon Zest, it wouldn’t spray anymore, I filled the bottle with water…new Lemon Zest. Softer, but still worked in a pinch 🙂
Question: Does the ink still react to wet stuff after the gesso dries?

    • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 12:42 pm

Yes, the ink bleeds up through even after it is dry. So if I were to add more gesso on top or an acrylic paint, it will bleed up through it.

  • Jeanne September 24, 2014, 11:40 am

Love how spray inks are FAST! Just get the bottle out and spray, no tool needed!
Cool looking stencil! TFS this chance at this giveaway.
    🙂

  • Tina September 24, 2014, 11:55 am

I was just using Dylusions yesterday and getting frustrated with them because I wasn’t getting the look I wanted. I’m definitely going to try this technique because I LOVE the way this looks … and I’d love to win the stencil too! Thanks for the giveaway!

  • April Lopez September 24, 2014, 12:22 pm

i love words. I love word stencils and stamps and anything that makes words! Just love them!

  • Sandra Strait September 24, 2014, 12:29 pm

I love that stencil, and it amazes me the wonderful effects you can get from it!

  • Sandra Strait September 24, 2014, 12:33 pm

  • Sandra Strait September 24, 2014, 12:36 pm
  • Vicki September 24, 2014, 12:54 pm

I have a few of these dyes and didn’t know what to do with them. Thanks for the information. Having so much fun watching and learning from you,

  • Eileen September 24, 2014, 12:58 pm

I haven’t tried those yet, kind of color shy but what I love to do is add the gesso first let or heat set then add the sprays because some the colors look even bolder. I also do this if I don’t want the spray ink not to bleed on to my next in journal. I love shimmerz sprazy, tattered angel, and Lindy stamp gang.

  • Vicki September 24, 2014, 12:59 pm

can you mix up the brands of dyes on one page? They each have different properties so I am wondering if you’d end up with mud?
    Thanks

    • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 1:05 pm

You bet you can! You’ll see that in Thur. and Fri.’s Play Dates.

  • Sally Malec September 24, 2014, 1:37 pm

So if I understood you correctly the inks don’t become permanent even after putting gesso on them. Is there a way to make them permanent?

    • Carolyn Dube September 24, 2014, 2:06 pm

Any gesso I’ve used with Dylusions, the ink always bleeds up through.

  • Cheryl Gebhart September 24, 2014, 2:24 pm

Ah, finally, a brand I actually have! But a technique that is new to me. So I will try this out soon. I like your page! Thanks for the opportunity to win one of your stencils, which is also very cool, btw.

  • Vicki Ross September 24, 2014, 2:42 pm

Great one, Carolyn! AND, join us over on Colorful Playground, google+. It is well worth being involved!

  • vicki Ross September 24, 2014, 2:45 pm

Colorful JOURNEY, not playground. duh. and it is fun with either name…

  • Mary in IL September 24, 2014, 2:55 pm

I did not know these inks could “show through” gesso. Thanks for the information! Off to play now.

  • Beverley September 24, 2014, 2:55 pm

Oooh this is delicious…. wonder if we have these sprays in the UK. And I lurve the stencil.

  • Rosie September 24, 2014, 3:00 pm

I never thought of doing this, but I love the look. Time for me to get out the Dylusions and gesso and give this a try. Hmm, now if I just had that stencil . . . .

  • Annie September 24, 2014, 3:14 pm

What a fun video. I loved it.
    Annie

  • Denise Spillane September 24, 2014, 3:20 pm

This is what I love about Dylusions ink. So much fun to capture the bleed and see what happens. I did this with a texture medium and it was so cool I didn’t want to continue working over it.

  • Heather Warner-Ferguson September 24, 2014, 3:25 pm

Thank you so much for sharing this about spray inks… love the colors and vibrancy of it all!

  • Denise Huntington September 24, 2014, 4:11 pm

What a great tip! I’ve put Dylusions on top of acrylic paint and gesso after they had dried and had success but had it bleed if they were not completely dry (which can be interesting). I’ve never tried to put gesso on top of dry Dylusions. Now I want to try that out. Yours turned out yummy!

  • Marina September 24, 2014, 5:29 pm

Clever the way the inks peer through the gesso. I like the subtlety, but would have found it hard to cover those lovely inks initially. Thanks for sharing.

  • Brenda Meade September 24, 2014, 7:28 pm

How fun!! I want to win! I need more stencils in my life!

    Tweeted this!

  • Raine September 24, 2014, 7:30 pm

I love how you took something that is normally thought of as a “negative” and turned it into a positive! What a great background that makes!

  • Melissa Schroeder September 24, 2014, 7:53 pm

Loved this video. Just completed my “collection” of these spray inks. Now I’ll stock the postman until they arrive!

  • Win Dinn September 24, 2014, 7:55 pm

This is one of my favourite techniques; ‘discovered by oops’ and used frequently. I just love the soft look and feel it gives!

  • Nancy Sapp September 24, 2014, 7:57 pm

I love all your videos & have gone back & watched them all! That stencil would be awesome – for some lucky winner! Keeping my fingers here.

  • Ruth September 24, 2014, 9:33 pm

Thanks for the spray and gesso demo… what will you do with this now???
    Thanks, Ruth

    • Carolyn Dube September 25, 2014, 8:45 am

Don’t know yet – at some point my muse will tell me what to do with it!

  • Kelli J. Getchell September 24, 2014, 10:53 pm

I found out this very thing by accidents with my first bottle of Dylusions. I just wanted to spray a bit of blue and went overboard…no matter how much gesso I painted over it the blue kept coming back so I just went with it. 🙂

  • Liz Lumsden September 25, 2014, 12:00 am

Learning all kinds of cool stuff from you, Carolyn! Love these Play Date videos! Thank you so much.

  • Teresa R September 25, 2014, 3:47 am

Can’t wait to try this with my Dylusions spray inks

  • Tracy September 25, 2014, 5:07 am

That’s one of the things I love about using spray inks with stencils – you can use them to stamp with, too! Loving your play with spray 🙂

  • Shari Czerwinski September 25, 2014, 9:21 am

Thanks for another great video (I love watching you create)! Hope to get some spray inks and play 🙂

  • Liza X September 25, 2014, 10:34 am

Loving this series and all the new ideas for spray inks. I love sprays, but am not as creative as you at finding different ways to work with them. Thanks for sharing with us!

  • Rita McGregor September 25, 2014, 10:57 am

    I LOVE script stencils!! 🙂

  • Carol Ponsford September 25, 2014, 2:19 pm

This is probably one of my favorite things about Dylusion sprays other than the lovely bright colors. I do love the bleed through look. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Helen Harper September 25, 2014, 2:58 pm

I love your experiments, and I am sure that the Spray Ink play paper will appear (or disappear) in another project!
    Love your videos. Thank you.

  • Suztats September 25, 2014, 4:41 pm

I’d love to win the RW stencil! This was fun to watch and see how the gesso and the inks worked together. Thanks.

  • Sharon September 25, 2014, 6:59 pm

Carolyn, I love your videos, they are easy to follow and really inspire me to have a go and what the heck if it doesn’t work out, just go with it! Thank you so much for helping me loosen up! I would love to have a chance to win this stencil as I love the ‘wordy’ ones they go with everything and anything, Sharon xx

  • Rebecca Buchanan September 25, 2014, 8:50 pm

I love the bleeding through effect, but I also love the look you got when cleaning the stencil on the side using the paper towel roll. Was wondering about the few spray inks I have so far and this has given me some new ideas. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts with us!!!

  • Monica September 25, 2014, 10:30 pm

Oh I hope I win. having stencils shipped to Canada costs so much money!

  • Lynne Phelps September 25, 2014, 10:40 pm

I do not have a big area and overspray is a problem. I made my own “color catcher” box like a mini spray booth out of a cardboard box. I can also use this to prop up the surface in a vertical position to spray to get all the gorgeous runs and drips!

  • pjay hansen September 26, 2014, 2:45 am

Love the video, playdates and dylusions. Thanks for the chance to win.

  • pjay hansen September 26, 2014, 2:47 am

    Pinned it.

  • Michelle Reynolds September 26, 2014, 3:43 am

Thanks for sharing this video Carolyn, I’ve recently bought some of these spray inks and am looking for various ways to use them.

  • Michelle Reynolds September 26, 2014, 3:44 am

    Pinned it too!

  • Glenda L September 26, 2014, 11:27 am

Love this tutorial. I can see using it as a scrapbook background page, but would need some fixative for the spray ink first. Can’t wait to try it out. Thanks a bunch.

  • Sue Pompetti September 26, 2014, 5:29 pm

I would be thrilled! Love the techniques!

  • Barbara Poe September 26, 2014, 6:33 pm

I love the dylusions. I can’t wait to try this technique.

  • Kathryn September 26, 2014, 9:03 pm

I love the bleed throughs! I have been stocking up on Dylusions and I like this way of making them part of an interesting colour background. Thanks Carolyn.

  • Ruth Reaves September 26, 2014, 11:30 pm

I am loving these Play Dates- quick & easy

  • Liz Lumsden September 27, 2014, 4:47 am

I think I need to invest in a small gel plate to really take advantage of some of the techniques you have been sharing!

  • Mandy Fariello September 27, 2014, 10:39 am

I also like to use white acrylic paint over the dylusions. It bleeds through like the gesso, but is shiny on top. Fun videos as always!

  • Faith September 28, 2014, 12:14 am

This is one of the most useful videos ever! For me. Tank you. 🙂

  • Cara B. September 28, 2014, 1:40 am

What an awesome technique! I love love looooove bright vibrant colors of Dylusions. I can see how muting it sometimes can be super fun too! Bright rainbow skittles colors. Love that description!

  • Laurie Hunt September 28, 2014, 4:19 am

This is one of my fAvorite things to do with Dylusions.

  • TheresaMP September 28, 2014, 6:58 am

okay, two different chances to win a word stencil. maybe I should pay attention. thanks as always for sharing.

  • Mary September 28, 2014, 8:02 am

Neat technique! It’s such fun (and a learning experience) to watch you experiment, and things always turn out, even the “oopses” (is that a word??) Would love to win! Thanks for the videos and for the giveaways! ☺

  • Angela Watson September 28, 2014, 2:48 pm

Dylusions are one of my top three favorites! I can’t imagine a better pairing: spray ink & a Rembrandt Words stamp.

  • Michelle M September 28, 2014, 6:53 pm

This is my FAVORITE in the series! It’s so bright!

  • Michelle M September 28, 2014, 6:56 pm
  • Jane Ellen Kimball September 28, 2014, 7:59 pm

Wow I would never have thought of gesso OVER the spray inks (love her inks by the way) What a great idea. Love the stencil too- as always. Thanks

  • Melody S. from KS September 28, 2014, 8:42 pm

I actually have the supplies already for this technique! I’m going to try it for a background for an ATC swap I committed to! Can’t wait to try it out! Love all of your stencils…but this one has been on my wish list for a while!

  • Gini Cooper September 28, 2014, 11:19 pm

Thanks for all the info on sprays. I love to spray then use the stencil with water to ghost the image. Really loving the word stencils and will hope to win one!

  • Yvonne September 28, 2014, 11:38 pm

    Hi,

Very cool technique; it is one I will try.

  • Lucy September 29, 2014, 4:55 am

Loving that Rembrandt stencil! Sure would love to win one!

  • Lissa September 29, 2014, 6:02 am

    Love stencils and sprays!

  • Vicky September 30, 2014, 2:07 pm

Love the playdates, wish it could be in person though.

  • Carolyn September 30, 2014, 2:24 pm

Question, instead of a comment this time – any idea if a fixative would seal them? I keep meaning to try but … well … attention span of a flea and all that.

  • beverly October 1, 2014, 5:37 pm

It’s another fun technique to try. No fear, right?

  • Andrene October 2, 2014, 7:41 pm

I love the Dylusions especially when I don’t want that shimmer look. She has such great colors in her sprays!
