When I saw Pam Carriker’s designs for Stencil Club I fell in love.  Not with Pam, I’m already in love with her work, with Frida!  I must confess I hadn’t really understood all the buzz about Frida until I had a chance to play with her.

I do so love that every month a new package arrives filled with stencils but this month I got an unexpected bonus.  I got to know an amazing woman.

Did a bit of reading on this fascinating woman before I starting arting.  She was strong, having overcome tragedy and using her tragedies in her art.

As I read about her life and her adventures, all I could think was how I would love to have seen a reality TV show starring her.

There is so much to explore about Frida, I am just getting started with this quick art journal page!

Black paint on the stencil and a quick smearing of orange paint around her.  These were easy lines to work around and I still managed to get paint on her face.  Oops.  Now my art journal page is imperfect.  Perfect!

Stenciled in some of the flowers around her.

More pink around her.  The smears around her face really jumped out at me so  I covered them with a touch of white paint.  But then I realized- this is an art journal.  This is not going to be hanging in the Louvre any time soon. Out I kicked that pesky perfectionist!

In so many of her photos and self portraits she had colorful flowers in her hair.  So I wanted flowers in her hair. But the bold background made it tough for me to get the stencil to stand out…so tape to the rescue!

I tried to type the directions for making this flower.  After 3 paragraphs of awkward directions I realized, MAKE A VIDEO!  So here it is- a quick one showing how to make a tape flower.

Video showing how to use various tapes to make a colorful element for a canvas, art journal and more with Carolyn Dube

I had, notice I said had, a whole drawer full of washi tapes that I hadn’t been using.  I loved them when I bought them but they just sat in the drawer.  Until I started transforming them with color and pattern.  Suddenly they started being used.  That is the seed that led to my latest workshop, Transform Your Tape!  Not only washi tape, but also packing tape, and artist tape will be transformed!

It’s on sale until class begins- just $30 for over 2 hours of video! You can find all the Transform Your Tape details here!

Now that I have  bright, fun and playful tapes I am ready to use them!

I started with a piece of cardboard covered in all sorts of tapes which were made using the techniques in Transform Your Tape.

Thanks to my die cutting machine, these shapes were easy to make!  Both dies are from Sizzix  (branch with leaves and arch frame).

The paint on this art journal page came from stamping off a butterfly rubber stamp as I used it to create a subtle effect on the canvas.   I know, me subtle!

The lines of color on the chipboard letters? That’s Inka Gold by Viva Decor with the Mini Lines Stencil by Mary Beth Shaw over at StencilGirl Products!  I love the look of the metallic with such fine lines!

Here’s the final canvas!  It might not be sunny outside today but I have a bright rainbow of color here!  Hope your day is full of color too!

On to the videos!

The first video shows how I used one stencil over and over again to build up the colors in this print. I lined up the stencil imperfectly to create the layers. Don’t worry, there isn’t any measuring!

The stencil I am playing with is called Stitch a Circle by Maria McGuire for StencilGirl Products.  You might recognize Maria from our Artsy Fartsy adventures!

You can watch the video on YouTube at A Colorful Gelli Print Party for September.

The 2nd video shows how I used one of the prints to make the art journal page above.  I even colored the background of the page with the Gelli Plate!  I was so eager to play, I actually forgot to get a photo of the paper before I started cutting!

Keep your eyes open for the Oops- once again I am grateful for my Oops!
