It’s summertime here. Kids think of the pool. I think of spray painting outside. As I brought my Liquitex spray paints out to the picnic table, I knew there was going to be an Oops. There always is with me. The Oops today was a gift that let me see overspray in a new way.
I covered over an old canvas that never went anywhere with Cadmium Yellow Light Hue spray paint.
Notice that messy edge where the spray paint went over the stencil? I spent about a nano second scolding myself for not putting down a piece of paper to mask it and prevent it. Then I remembered, it is just an Oops.
This top layer of Vivid Lime Green let some of the blue peek through creating more depth without any hard work.
How’d I do it? I put the stencil exactly on top of the image already spray painted. Then shifted it a hair to one side and sprayed.
The Gift in the Oversprayed Oops
Remember that overspray Oops with the blue? That overspray encouraged me to just cover the edges while I adding the green Opera House layer. The actual stencil created the frame as well as the image.
That got me thinking about overspray and how else I could use it to my advantage.
Here’s a work in progress from later in the day. It uses the overspray from the Opera House stencil to create a subtle touch to the composition. Gives me a feeling of the sunshine coming from the Chevron Doily stencil.
I Seuss-ified my dog. How? With a circle stencil and doggie colored hair spray. So far, Chewie has been the only other polka dotted dog we’ve seen at the park. I know you’re shocked…
This is the spray I used and it was a gift. No idea where they got it but I did find some other brands on-line. This one had the best best best photos of how to decorate your dog.
Even if you don’t have a dog…take a look at the photos of what they did to their dogs!
Doing this was just like spray inking anything, except that the dog will wiggle and move…so the hubby held him still in his arms. I held the Bubbles stencil in place with my hand and sprayed just in the middle of the stencil. Then moved the stencil and sprayed again. And again.
The dog didn’t mind being sprayed but I think it did feel a bit strange to him. As soon as we let him down, he rolled in the grass. I assume he was trying to remove his purple-ness but the color stayed!
It will wash out so after his next bath he’ll be back to his normal brown and white….But until then I have a Seuss-fied little doggie!
My kids bonded with the dog in a new way since they have another area of common ground. Now the dog knows how they felt as kids when they would be dressed up in holiday finery for the endless family photos.
I think the dog thought this was a pretty good deal since he ended up with more than one doggie treat for being so patient with me and my purple polka dot idea….Thanks Chewie!
Would I like to play with Totem Poppets they asked. The name alone sounded fun to me! When the goodies arrived in my mailbox, I realized how customizable these animals are…which means freedom! I can make them whatever I want. Wish these were around when my kids were little, oh the possibilities. Since my kids are almost grown, I will just step up to be the kid and play.
But I wondered about my limited attention span and patience about putting the animals together. Not an issue with the new-to-me cool eyelet setter. It was easy, fast, and most importantly, entertaining with the lift and let go way of setting eyelets. I was more easily entertained than I want to admit…
Check out the video and see how this art journal page came together. There are plenty of Oops moments in there. It felt like every time I had a direction I was going, I changed my mind. This is just an art journal so I can change my mind. Over and over. And over again.
I might have changed my mind, a lot, while creating this art journal page but this unicorn and my muse reminded me of the magic of play (and how useful it is to keep scraps of Gelli printed paper around….).
