Let's Play link party “Can I go over to Christi’s house?”  “Can Maria come over?” As a kid, I was always asking to go to a friends house or to have a friend or two come over. Now I am an adult and I still want to play!  So I am interrupting my grown up day for a little play!

How do we find time to play with people like us now that we’re adults with day to day responsibilities?  The internet! I am starting a new feature each week on the blog, called Let’s Play, so that we can all be inspired by each other.

Art Play! Now that means you and me!  I’ll share something and you share something.  Remember,  no matter where we are on our creative journey, it is inspiring to others so share the fun.

But what if you don’t have a blog?  You don’t have to have one!  You only need to have a photo of what you’re creating.  You can upload it directly to the link party.   If you’ve got a url to a photo you can link it up (like Flicker, G+, Instragam, Google+, etc) and we can all then leave you some comment love.   Need help understanding urls?  Click here for how to find URLS.

Here’s my play for this week and boy did I get stuck on the layer that should have been the easiest! I started with a page from a cardboard journal I made and then let friends in the Facebook group tell me what to do next. I randomly picked a comment after each layer, or I should say Random.org picked the comments.  I had no idea where it was going from one layer to the next- a great bit thank you to everyone for their suggestions!  It was so much fun I will be doing this again!

Watch Art journaling when I have no idea where it is going on YouTube.

I was playing with paint and stencils on cardboard and a story appeared

The way a piece of art play starts does not always give me an hint as to where it will go.  As was the case with this piece of cardboard and paint…who knew this would end up being Marie Antoinette on a gameshow?

I was playing with paint and stencils on cardboard and a story appearedArched Aqueducts stencil by Carolyn Dube for StencilGirl ProductsI was playing around with my Arched Aqueduct stencil with absolutely no idea where it was going.  The cardboard was way too small for the entire stencil so I just used some of it.

I am just playing around on cardboard so there isn’t any pressure to make it anything…those of you who have taken my free workshop, Permission to Play can spot all the ways I am letting myself play in this blog post!  (There is still time to get in the free workshop too!)

The dress on her called to me.  No clue how she fit into where this was going but I loved that dress.  She is from a digital kit from  itKuPilli Imagenarium Funderful at MischiefCircus.com and applied with Craft Attiude and a glue stick.  You can see how to use Craft Attitude in this blog post and video.

As I flipped through stencils, a word jumped out at me – Choose from my Uplifting Words stencil. Once I had choose on there  all that kept going through my head was Marie on a gameshow trying to pick which door had the best prize behind it…so out came Seth Apter’s Numbers stencil.

Which door would she chose?  Would it be door number one, number two or number 3? And then what are the prizes behind each door…my mind was having a blast with the possibilities.

Next I wanted texture, oh I wanted texture.  So I grabbed the purple Prills from USArtQuest.

And here I thought  I was all done…but when I saw it later…I realized I wasn’t finished with it…and that’s okay…I am allowed to change my mind! She was missing something very important to me.

Scribble journaling!  As long as I had the Pico embellisher out, I added more outlines to Choose and the doors before I journaled.

All finished now…or at least I think she’s finished but I keep thinking about all the possibilities of what would be behind each door…what do you think  would be behind these as prizes worthy of Marie?

She took Brené Brown's words about creativity to heart...and the book jacket!I am going to gush a bit here.  I am a huge fan of Brené Brown and her message about shame and vulnerability.  I loved her And I Thought it Was Just Me…and The Gifts of Imperfection changed how I saw the world…and Daring Greatly spoke to my soul.  So I wondered what on earth she’d have in Rising Strong.  It is hands down my favorite Brené book.

She writes so personally, as if she is just sitting across the sofa talking to you.  That’s on the inside but I wanted the outside to feel just as personal. Brené isn’t going to stop by and do that for all of us…she’d have to be better than Santa Claus to make that happen.  But I could make the cover personal.

She took Brené Brown's words about creativity to heart...and the book jacket! It has a paper book jacket and paper calls for paint in my world.  Out came the brushes and paint.  I gave it light wash of white and then started with the colors.   Then, I followed the letters in Rising Strong with yellow paint.  I used the lines as guides, not as rules, so if I didn’t fill it all in or went over the line a touch it was just fine with me.

After brushing on the blues and pinks around letters I wanted a very imprecise painting tool for the orange…the Q Tip.

This was just like art journaling but instead of starting on a blank page or in a journal it was on a book jacket.

So now when the book is on my nightstand…the minute I see it I have a visual reminder of her message. Thank you Brené for Rising Strong, another insightful and life changing book!
