Paris Polka Dots...an art journaling tutorial using printable collage elements and stencils by Carolyn Dube

This page was inspired by a gel print.  It was supposed to be all about the colors and bits of pattern peeking out in that print.  But plans don’t always go as planned.

Okay, mine rarely go as planned. Turns out it was a polka dots and Paris kind of page that emerged from the play.

In the video, you’ll see how I made a custom black color to match the image I cut out and how I customized the stencil to my needs…after all stencils are a tool that can be used in many many ways!

Watch on YouTube.

That colorful gel print, made on a gel printing plate by Gel Press, totally captured my creative heart.  Apparently, that print was only there to spark my play and not actually be a noticeable part of the finished page…

The printable pages of fun images here are from Tumble Fish Studio and Hidden Vintage Studio.  Check out all their wonderful creations in their shops but if you are looking for these specific pages they are included exclusively for students in the Art Journaling FUNdamentals workshop.  You jump on in and join the workshop anytime while registration is open.

Stencils are tools and tools can be used in multiple ways.  The Opera House stencil wasn’t as tall as I wanted so I simply made it taller.

That gel print that started the play is in the page.  It’s the itty bitty sniblet of a scrap of paper below the word “original” that Ms. Polka Dot is standing on.

The rainbow waited patiently for its turn and it knew I would use it somewhere on the page.  The inside of the marquee frame was just the spot for a pop of color thanks to a scrap leftover from previous play with the Doodle It Bigger stencil by Maria McGuire.

The page doesn’t have much color…but that will be changing!  Next week, I’ll be sharing how I added even more color to this page!  Get signed up for my newsletter and you’ll be sure to see that post.

How to Use Compressed Air and the Rainbow in Your Art JournalThe more I try to control an art journal page, the less I like it.  But letting go of control is a tough thing to do since it isn’t instinctive for me (which is an understatement according to my husband).

I am always looking for ways to help myself let go and thwart that left brain when I am in the studio.  Compressed air is a great tool for that after all it is tough to control that little straw of air!

This page started in another Let’s Play video– you can see how I let go of control when it came to color here.

Watch Playing in my art journal with compressed air and the rainbow on YouTube.

***When working with compressed air, it is important to read the safety information on the can before you start playing!***

Want to see more ways I’ve used compressed air in an art journal- check out this video.

How to Use Compressed Air and the Rainbow in Your Art JournalHere’s what it looked like with just the white high flow.  I could have stopped here but those cans of compressed air are such fun to play with so I added a few more colors! After all, this is a Let’s Play video.

I used to find shapes in the clouds...now I find them in my paint palette! So many characters with such ridiculous stories to tell! What do you see in them?

I used to find shapes in the clouds…now I find them in my paint palette!  These characters all came from this one paint palette.   They have slightly ridiculous stories to tell..okay not slightly!

One of these characters will be the next Spark of Art-spiration but I can’t decide which one to include as the free download in the newsletter going out on Sunday.  Which one would you like me to include?  Let me know in the comments!   Not signed up for the newsletter yet?  Get signed up here.

The Tales:

1. Yellow bunny grabbing for an orange carrot…but not just any bunny- a Ninja bunny!  She’s got a black belt after all!

2. A blue woman smelling a pink rose that makes her day so much brighter than it was!

3. This is a Simpsons-esque character with the yellow flesh and wisp of hair on top running to get away from the tornado whipping all sorts of colorful paint in the air.

4. Tigger…who is now all green thanks to an unfortunate St. Patrick’s Day cake accident or was he just trying to get the entire cake for himself?

5. This green guy with a yellow hard hat is running for his life as aliens invade in what looks like a flying banana.  Of course, he seems to have a very scared blue cat in his arms…

So now you know what’s been bouncing around in my head when I saw these.  What do you see in them?  And be sure to leave a comment and tell me which one you want me to turn into a Spark of Art-spiration for the next newsletter!
