Art journaling video tutorial sharing that it doesn't matter where you start what matters is that you start by Carolyn Dube

Starting is the most important step when playing.  How I start doesn’t matter and this video proves it!

I started with warm colors then went a completely different direction under the sea thanks to a color O.O.P.S!  I had no idea what the fish were for…until I was writing up the post for this week’s Let’s Play!

What is Let’s Play?  It’s all about rediscovering the ability to play and each month I share a specific strategy that helped me recapture the freedom and fun of play.  This month’s theme is just start. You can see more of the Let’s Play series here. Watch the video of how this page was started as I dealt with my art supply hoarding issues  here.

This page was full of muted colors and ample white space when I started.  It was shouting to me to add the rainbow.

This temple became playful thanks to the vibrant colors of All Purpose Inks and Fantastix.  The warm colors were setting the tone of the page, for the moment.

Then there was the green paint O.O.P.S- it was such an Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly.  Without that I never would have stenciled the fish.

The amount of joy I felt when I realized I could use the spotter brush was off the charts.  Why?  Well, a spotter is the world’s finest paintbrush which has about 4 short bristles on it.  And I ordered it by mistake.  An OOPS and it was ideal to make the little fish eyes on the stenciled school of fish!

When I grabbed the fish, it didn’t make a bit of sense to me why fish.  What do fish have to do with anything?  It turns out a lot.  As I was putting this post together.  The aged Greek temples and fish.  What else could it be other than Atlantis!

What will I do on the next layer? Something definitely related to Atlantis!

Colorful mixed media play by Carolyn Dube

A forgotten piece of play grabbed my attention and before I knew it, a visitor showed up. This bright, and quite silly, character came to life all because of an O.O.P.S.

I started by stenciling the word dreams with acrylic paint and my Vintage Typewriter stencil on a canvas board that had been hanging around the studio for eons.

Was this word significant to this piece? Did I have a plan for where it was going.  Nope.  Just had the impulse with that word, so I went with it.  By the end, I knew why that word popped into my head.

The impulse to use inks struck me, so I pulled them out and started adding color willy nilly all over the canvas board.

While the inks were drying, I noticed Thing 1 showed up. Only Dr. Seuss knows for sure if this was actually Thing 1 or Thing 2, but my money is on 1.

Once it was dry, I added white spray ink.  This white, by DecoArt, is slightly translucent.  That piece of book text is protecting the goofy face I suddenly saw in the layers of color.

After spraying it, I had the impulse to smear white around, so I followed that impulse!

Impulses had been leading me along on this until now and I almost got stuck here.  I started thinking and when I start thinking, there impulses are far and few between.  I am more cautious.  But luckily, I had an impulse and followed it.

O.O.P.S.  It did not turn out the way I expected so it is just an Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly. Not a mistake but an O.O.P.S.

This was just a face before the pink oil pastel spiked hair, but now he has personality.  He has the attitude that comes with pink spiked hair the doubles the size of your head. And I love him even more than what I was trying to create!

Why the word dreams?  Because dreams don’t have the same filters that conscious thought does and this canvas was all about not filtering my impulses.  Now what to call him…

How to play and create a stenciled canvasYou just have to start. Something.  Anything.  It’s the most important step when it comes to play.  What you start doing doesn’t have to be perfect or magical.  In fact, you’ll see how this starts as simple shapes and becomes a mixed media canvas called Once in a Blue Moon over Venice.

I had no idea the circle would become that moon because play doesn’t require a plan and clearly I didn’t have one as I started.   It became a hot mess.  Then there was the O.O.P.S. (you knew there was going to be one)…then the layers built up as I played including some sloppy stenciling.

The moon had been there from the beginning but it wasn’t until I did one little thing that I actually saw it!  Watch the video and see the entire process from start to finish.

Watch How I play and create a stenciled canvas on YouTube.

Here’s the fineliner tutorial mentioned in the video.

I grabbed what I had on the counter, oil pastels, Deco Media Fluid Acrylics, and an old canvas.  In the next step you’ll see the fancy shapes I made.

Circles.  Basic circles and some scribbling.  Nothing fancy at all here.  Play doesn’t have to be fancy to be fun.

The background built up mixed media style as I did some very messy and runny stenciling. The finger painting brought me joy and I went too far with the white paint.  OOPS, but that just means it is an Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly.

As soon as I flipped the canvas over, I saw a blue moon glowing in the night sky.  This is art play, not historically accurate…after all would a blue moon glow orange?

Stencils are versatile. In the video, you see how I adapted the Venetian stencil to fit the canvas just the way I needed it to fit and how I made those glowing windows.

This canvas would never have been created without that first step, the first mark on it.  That is why starting is the most important step for play.  After all, every time you play it has to start somewhere! How to play and create a stenciled canvas
