I’ve been seeing the word vulnerable in all sorts of places lately so it was no surprise to me that it ended up in my art journal. There is strength in knowing you are vulnerable and embracing all that it entails. As woman emerged, she struck me as strong and the type who embraces her vulnerabilities.
Randomly stenciling with acrylic paint.
White acrylic paint and a touch of pink acrylic paint.
Inktense Pencils to outline her.
Water to spread the Inktense Pencils to add some color to her. Silks to add a touch of shimmer.
The banner was made with sticky back canvas.
Stabilo pencil to add a touch of journaling. These pencils write so easily over any surface I’ve ever had in any of my art journals.

In the comments, I was asked where I got the paper doll. I have all sorts of paper doll books that I have amassed over the years but no idea which one this particular lady came from… They are extremely affordable especially considering how many ways you can use them! I love the unexpected shades of violet, green and blue you used in this journal page! It looks so exuberant! And makes being vulnerable a good thing rather than a negative thing

What a nice way to start my morning. Great video and I love the way you put that splash of pink stencil with the green and blue. Love the idea of the blow up of the figure then cutting it out. Hey, cut it out.. ha.

She came out beautifully, Carolyn! I love it. I love your idea of using a paper doll and cutting it out and applying it to the composition. And I loved watching her emerge from your creativity, and I love how much you clearly were enjoying yourself all through the entire process to the finished page. I also love what you wrote about there being strength in our vulnerability – I agree. This is wonderful, and I’m inspired to try this soon, too. Thanks for sharing!
Oops! I forgot to add that I love Jessica’s Random Squares stencil. I’m only a newbie to stencils (as you know), but I am drawn to them – I like the freedom and sense of play they offer. Great stuff! I’m off now to have a look at Jessica’s website/blog to see what other stencils she has (besides this brilliant one) and maybe buy more than one while I’m there. Thanks again!

I also wanted to ask you: where did you find a paper doll? I haven’t seen them since I was a kid.

I put the links to several paper doll books in the post above. I wish I could remember which one it originally came from but I don’t. My dolls are all cut apart and separated from their original books.
I have yet to use “sticky-back canvas,” but now totally understand why I need it! I just love your banner title, how you adjusted the silhouette to “strut,” and the colors you have chosen…feminine, yet strong! I love the juxtaposition of that with the title VULNERABLE! Well done!

I LOVE to watch the videos – this was no exception!! I watched your play with the Gelli Plate with great interest. Here in Denmark we can’t buy them – and not everybody ships to DK. I did get my hand on the two smaller sizes though and I’m in love (like everybody else 
) I see that yoy and a lot of other people share your work with “the plate” on Pinterest. Can I ask how you post it there?? I would love to share some of my work/play also… I think it’s great fun to find inspiration in other peoples work

Isn’t it funny how sometimes a word will keep appearing to us in random ways like you mentioned that the word vulnerable was showing up for you. I like how it came to you to make this journal page in a way that vulnerable is not a threatening word but rather a word to be embraced. I love the stencil and I can’t get over how creative all of you test drivers are. Great work.
Carolyn, this is gorgeous and a wonderful way to use the stencil. I can see why you were so eager to get this stencil. It is so versatile. Paper dolls. Does anyone besides the Dover Publications people even make them any more? I grew up with paper dolls, even making my own and their clothes.

Well I totally totally enjoyed watching your video! I am amazed at how much thought goes into such a journal page. When I draw I just draw, I do not think about how I am going to do it, or why, I just do! Such different processes, but both obviously so enjoyable ! HPPF! Oh, and yes, I loved your outcome!
