I am honored to be a part of Handcrafted Holidays- a fun online workshop of 10 artists- each with a holiday project. The projects can be adapted for not only your holiday celebrations, but other times of the year as well. After all, gifts from the heart are for all seasons!
What project did I contribute? A colorful advent calendar that has the whole rainbow in it. Of course you can adapt it to whatever colors make you happiest! I had a chance to talk with Miriam Schulman, the host of this fun workshop, about the long standing family tradition of advent calendars and how I use them to make the holidays much easier on myself during our Artist Chat- which you can watch on her blog here. Plus there is a free download waiting for you over there.
Miriam’s put together a video telling you all about each project in the workshop and introducing you to each artist!
• Mexican Star Piñata with Danita Art • Poinsettia Mola with Jane LaFazio • Gift Boxes with Marjie Kemper • Wrapping Embellishments with Andrea Gomoll • Inspirational Word Ornaments with Miriam Schulman • Wonder Poppets with Mystele Paint • Star Ornament with Blenda Tyvoll • Tzedakah Box with Jessica Sporn • Golden Letters with Joanne Sharpe • Colorful Advent Calendar with Carolyn Dube •

Control is a creativity killer for me. My left brain likes control, which is quite helpful in some areas of my life, but not when it comes to art and play.
Letting go of control is easier said than done but I have found ways to help myself do it. One way is by using a tool or supply, like a gel printing plate, that I can’t completely predict. That means I can’t completely control it either. My left brain has no choice but to deal with less control.
In the video, I’m using a Gel Press printing plate and building up layers of color and pattern with a stencil directly in an art journal. You’ll see how I handle it when the print doesn’t go quite the way I wanted. OOPS!
Adding the quin magenta was the big O.O.P.S., an Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly. Didn’t like what the opportunity was in that moment but it was there. Without that magenta, it never could have become the page that has become a favorite of mine!
Just layering one stencil over and over let the colors of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics build and create scrumptious color variation. Here’s a close up of the layers.
Since this is play, I am under no contractual obligation to complete this page in one session. Or in one day. I’m enjoying this background and all the bits of colors mingling together for now. When the muse is ready, she’ll let me know what to do next.
Of course I’ll share what I do next to this page. Want to be sure you don’t miss it? Then just keep an eye out for my newsletter in your inbox. Not signed up yet? No problem- join the fun here!

It was a “P” day in my art journal….not only play but pink & polka dots & Paris! The bones or structure of this page has some color on it but not nearly enough for me. And along the way, I made a new friend, Phil, who was very helpful with the polka dots…which infected me with Polka Dot Fever.
In the video, I’m sharing how using a stencil twice makes it easy to add to touches of color here and there and everywhere…turns out Polka Dot Fever increases the need to rhyme.
You can see how this page started in this post using some fun images from Tumble Fish Studio and Hidden Vintage Studio and a gel print.
You’re probably wondering how that gel print was used to start this page since you can barely see it in the finished one. Check out last week’s post and you’ll see how it all came about.
Phil, the O.O.P.S.
I ordered a bunch of brushes but apparently hit the wrong button because I ended up with a bunch of filbert brushes, which were new to me since I usually use a flat brush.
But it was an Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly because I am in love with these brushes I now affectionately call Phil.
Phil was just perfect for watercoloring in her polka dots.
Polka dot fever, which sounds a lot like a medical condition for artists, had overtaken me by this point. The Circles Layer Me stencil has 2 sizes of dots that can be layered on top of each other to create a plethora of pattern possibilities. In the video, you see how you I customize the pattern to the mood of the page.
The pink was a bit addictive for me so I added touches of it back onto the building by putting the Opera House stencil back on the page and selectively stenciling the windows.
That green you see at the top of the page…it wasn’t green paint…it was yellow. Yellow and blue make green after all! A final touch of scribble journaling and my thoughts were captured on the page. After all, couldn’t leave any blank spots!
