What do I do when I feel like coloring? I make my own coloring pages with stencils. In the video, you’ll see how I use Graphite Putty to create this one by making a stencil rubbing. What is Graphite Putty? It’s like Play-Doh meets a pencil!
Use a small amount of the Graphite Putty and create a flat-like shape. Notice the precision, or lack of, in my terminology. This is so forgiving- you just need some to rub on the paper. Since it is putty, as you rub it on the paper, it will get flatter and wider.
Step 3:
Then start coloring in the shapes using colored pencils. Can you use something like a marker? Sure…but just be aware that the graphite putty is water soluble. That means it will smear when it gets wet.
What am I going to do with this piece of colored paper full of geometric shapes? Not sure yet, but my art journal is whispering to me so this may end up in there.
Of course I’ll share what I create! Want to be sure you don’t miss it? Then just keep an eye out for my newsletter in your inbox. Not signed up yet? No problem- join the fun here!

I am honored to be a part of Handcrafted Holidays- a fun online workshop of 10 artists- each with a holiday project. The projects can be adapted for not only your holiday celebrations, but other times of the year as well. After all, gifts from the heart are for all seasons!
What project did I contribute? A colorful advent calendar that has the whole rainbow in it. Of course you can adapt it to whatever colors make you happiest! I had a chance to talk with Miriam Schulman, the host of this fun workshop, about the long standing family tradition of advent calendars and how I use them to make the holidays much easier on myself during our Artist Chat- which you can watch on her blog here. Plus there is a free download waiting for you over there.
Miriam’s put together a video telling you all about each project in the workshop and introducing you to each artist!

Control is a creativity killer for me. My left brain likes control, which is quite helpful in some areas of my life, but not when it comes to art and play.
Letting go of control is easier said than done but I have found ways to help myself do it. One way is by using a tool or supply, like a gel printing plate, that I can’t completely predict. That means I can’t completely control it either. My left brain has no choice but to deal with less control.
In the video, I’m using a Gel Press printing plate and building up layers of color and pattern with a stencil directly in an art journal. You’ll see how I handle it when the print doesn’t go quite the way I wanted. OOPS!
Adding the quin magenta was the big O.O.P.S., an Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly. Didn’t like what the opportunity was in that moment but it was there. Without that magenta, it never could have become the page that has become a favorite of mine!
Just layering one stencil over and over let the colors of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics build and create scrumptious color variation. Here’s a close up of the layers.
Since this is play, I am under no contractual obligation to complete this page in one session. Or in one day. I’m enjoying this background and all the bits of colors mingling together for now. When the muse is ready, she’ll let me know what to do next.
Of course I’ll share what I do next to this page. Want to be sure you don’t miss it? Then just keep an eye out for my newsletter in your inbox. Not signed up yet? No problem- join the fun here!
