Let’s Play with Playcolor Paint Sticks Meant for Kids

Video tutorial using playcolor paint sticks with rubber stamps to make an art journal background for this week's Let's Play link party! Let's Play, a link party where you can be inspired and be inspiring!

Ever stumble across an art supply that was made for kids but you just had to try it?  That’s what happened to me.  Loved these paint sticks when I found them, used them a few times, and then forgot all about them.

The embarrassing thing is they were actually on a shelf where I saw them every day but didn’t really see them.  But thanks to this month’s Let’s Play theme, I am redeeming myself and using these with some much older rubber stamps!

New to Let’s Play?  It’s all about how to let go and embrace the fun of artful play.  Each Tuesday, there’s a new link party where I’m sharing my play and you can link up to share your play.  And yes, it can be any creative play!  Plus there’s a monthly $50 gift certificate giveaway!

These are a kids supply…and they make me happy.  Why? Because of the creamy texture and that when they dry they are dry and don’t smudge or smear easily.  Now, if you hit them with a bunch of water they do smear since it is tempera paint…

Watch How to make art journal background with tempera paint sticks on YouTube.

Now you’ve seen my play…can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to!

This past weekend I snuck in a little time to play with some new chipboard die cuts from alphastamps.com. I made this little book for my 8 year old niece’s birthday present.

Aren’t we all kids? I like to use old fashioned crayons all the time. Xox

  • Zsuzsa Karoly-Smith February 9, 2016, 5:53 am

These look so similar to gelatos, but I know they wouldn’t react the same way. It’s so much fun even just watching you play with them!

  • Linda Ford February 9, 2016, 10:38 am

I love shadow stamps. I used some on my first ever blog post as a background for some zentangle. I hadn’t used them for years. Six months later, you have inspired me to get them back out and use them to create a background. I haven’ t used my Marvy la Plume water based pens for years either so they will be a great substitute for your play sticks. I’ ll try and link up at the weekend when half term starts!

You had just reminded me, during that video, I had something called “silky crayons” I could bust out. Sometimes kids arts stuff is so much more fun and less intimidating! Thanks for the reminder! Once I dusted off them cobb webs, I am having a blast! (Kidding about the Cobb webs! 🙂

  • erinne February 13, 2016, 4:16 pm

Love this! Since I do not have those tempora sticks, I was wondering if it would work with normal highlighters……….prob not as well. I am raising my grandkids so I do have paint items around………..I will try to create a stamp thing with something I have around and just try to use their markers or just plain temopra paint………..hahah wonderful page…..now I am going to hunt down their school markers and see if I can do the same hahahaha

What a coincidence, I just bought some of those paint sticks past weekend at a craft fair. Only tested them quickly on a piece of paper, but they are so creamy. Love watching you play.
