I have a fantastic gift for one lucky person thanks to Connie at Dirty Footprints Studio!  It is a spot in 21 Secrets!  Last year I had such a great time learning at 21 Secrets I jumped at the opportunity to learn with all new instructors this year!  There is so much to play with here!  The classes will be available until Jan. 1, 2012 – so plenty of time to squeeze art into a busy schedule!  Registration will close on October 1st.

Some of the instructors are Tammy Garcia of Daisy Yellow, Tamara Laporte of Willowing, Rachel Whetzel of A Year In The Life Of An Art Journal,  Natasha Reilly of Creative Nachos, Jeniffer Hutchins of Joyful Arts Studio,  Silky Hart of Expressive Hart, Erin Kenepp of Erin Kenepp Mixed Media Art,  Connie Hozvicka  the Founder & Director, Alma Stollerof Alma Stoller,  Lisa Wilson of Life Unity,  Lisa Dieken of Wild Creative Heart, and more! This is a $59.00 prize!  Just leave a comment and I’ll randomly pick a winner on September 15th!

This past weekend was Stampaway in Cincinnati, OH.  I have gone for year and years.  When I was just  a basic scrapbooker I found Stampaway.  Stamp Your Art Out, the stamping store where it all began for me, hosts the event.  There are 40-50 booths which allows for a variety of styles.  That’s handy since my friends aren’t always into the same things I am…There are demos & make it and take its of course.  But the part I love the most is the interaction with the artists & owners.

JudiKins was extremely nice & patient as I asked question after question about their products.  They even had scanner codes for smart phones to immediately bring up videos on your phones of their techniques.  Art going high tech!  Yeah!

B Line Designs is where I head for my travel stamps.  They seem to have the same interests in travel as I do, so there are always treasures in their booth for me!  They had a great freebie with purchase, a necklace made from a butterfly rubber stamp.

Red Lead had a great gift with purchase too!  Lots of people thought so since there was a huge rush to their booth as soon as the Friday night preview party began!  You’d think Elvis was in the building…

At Marco’s Paper they had Susan Pickering Rothamel from USArt Quest demoing.  I love to just watch her work.  I bought a cool tool last year, used it once, and never touched it again.  This year, I asked questions about it and found out what went wrong for me & how to get it to work for me.  Along the way, I learned new ways to use a set of mica watercolor paints I already owned. Invoke Arts is one of my favorites at Stampaway.   Their stamps just capture my imagination every time!  Watching their demo is just pure fun.

Mary Jo McGraw was demoing for Carmen’s Veranda & these two never disappoint. Sorry about the angle for this photo.  I really loved the screaming person on the end.

Start with a page out of an old book.  Die cut some shapes from cheap notebook paper.  I used Tim Holtz’s tag with the book plates.  Love those!  I found really cheap notebooks at Staples this week – 1 cent a notebook!  It was darn close to free!  Back to the art…I die cut more than I thought I needed since the materials are so cheap.  It gives me more options when I’m working.  I use the die cut as well as the leftovers.

Gesso the book pages.  Go all the way to the edge or not.  It is totally your choice.  I  do it both ways depending on my mood.  While the gesso is wet (hint work quickly) set the die cut shapes in the gesso.  The gesso will act as your glue.  For the look I am going for I am very careful not to get gesso on the top of the die cuts.  If you want a different look, get gesso where ever your heart desires!

Once the page is dry you can then color it.  This is when the gesso does its magic. Use spray inks, craft paint, Golden paint, any paint!  After you put the color on use a damp towel to wipe away the color from any area that was gesso’d.  Wipe a little or a lot.  It is up to you.
