TAP Blog Hop and Giveaway!

Step-by-step art journal page using Lesley Riley'sTAP by Carolyn Dube

Lesley Riley's TAPLesley Riley is celebrating her class, Mastering the Art of Transfers on Multiple Surfaces with a fantastic blog hop!   You get to see so many different artists using TAP and there is a giveaway on each and every blog! Including this one! Be sure to leave a comment here by Wed., July, 10th at noon Eastern time to win a spot in her class!

Lesley Riley's TAP class

Her class teaches you all about TAP (Transfer Artist Paper) on all sorts of surfaces.  TAP is amazing- you can use markers on it, stamp on it, inkjet print on it and more! No wonder TAP was named the Most Innovative New Product at CHA in 2011.

Here’s how I used TAP in my art journal.

Step-by-step art journal page using Lesley Riley'sTAP by Carolyn Dube

I started with scribbling into wet gesso. Once it was dry I added green paint.

Lizzie Mayne’s Fishscale Brick stencil at StencilGirl Products reminded me of so many old walkways we saw on our trip to London.  Of course, those walkways weren’t green due to acrylic paint…

I used my ink jet printer to put a photo from our trip onto TAP.  Then I ironed it right into the journal.  So easy and so fast!

Lesley shows you how to get amazing transfers in her class.  I didn’t want perfect. I wanted aged and imperfect so I did not iron it as long as I “should”…love that I can adjust it to what I want!  Notice how the texture in the gesso comes through!

This is what the release paper looks like!  This will definitely be showing up in an art journal or on a canvas.  Maybe some stitching…lots of possibilities….nothing wasted here!

London (by B Line Designs) was stamped on some old paper cloth I had made long ago.  It felt good to use something I had been saving!

Step-by-step art journal page using Lesley Riley'sTAP by Carolyn Dube

I wanted a bit of journaling but I don’t love my handwriting so I typed it.  I painted a piece of card stock and let it dry COMPLETELY!  Couldn’t decide on a font so I just printed the text in 3 different fonts.  My ink jet printer’s ink is very wet on painted surfaces so I let it sit overnight to dry.

I picked one and glued it onto the page.

  • Sandy Lane July 3, 2013, 1:37 pm

Please tell why the gelli plate I use glass or plastic & get the same results Tks Sandy

    • Carolyn July 3, 2013, 1:54 pm

Not sure if I am understanding you correctly but here’s what I think you are asking…You use plastic or glass just like how people use the Gelli Plate and get the same results. That is awesome if you can monoprint with that! I have not found the same results when I use glass at all. I have not tried plastic so I can’t speak to that one.

  • Jo Murray July 3, 2013, 1:57 pm

  • monique July 4, 2013, 4:00 pm

Your page looks wonderful. I am the same way with my writing, I always want to do it, but then don’t like what I did, must be some remnant from my school days, when the teacher tapped me on my fingers, telling me to write in italic, while I wanted to write in straight letters… Have to let go of this
    xx

Lovely work would love to win

  • Chandra July 5, 2013, 1:21 pm

I just did some transfers with ink jet print glued to water color paper and then wet to get the paper and peeled it off, it is such a long process. This transfer paper sounds like it is easier. I also like how you can make it look the way you like old or newer. I wanted brighter colors for my transfer so I ended up using tape transfer. So I wonder if you want brighter colors with these transfer sheets it will work ironing longer. Thanks for the chance to win the class. I love your London page it feels like your there in London.

    • Carolyn July 5, 2013, 2:21 pm

The colors are impacted by what is below them- so my light green background muted it a bit. My daughters bright hoodie would be very bright on white even with the way I ironed it. If I had ironed a touch longer there would have been more color too.

  • Joyce Segur July 5, 2013, 2:07 pm

  • McCall Bennett-Lawrence July 8, 2013, 8:37 pm

Oh PLeASE!! I’d love – love – love to take this class! honestly, learning to do transfer is actually at the very top of my wishlist – now that i have a gelli plate and have been learning that (in large part, thanks to YOU!) i am extremely new to all things “art” as part of ME…. Closest was a stint with B&W homeless people, portrait photography back in high school. However, I have always had a penchant for (1) buying stuff that I don’t really ‘need’ (it used to be clothes – now, it’s art supplies. i ansolutely love that paints time and pan pastels don’t require a dressing room or mirror!!) and i have always had a knack for creating a ridiculous/insane mess!!
I turn 40 on July 14th, so this would be a FANTASTIC gift!!! I have yet to take ANY sort of art class, and in fact, I began art journaling about 5 months ago… by necessity, not artistic calling, per se. I have Behçet’s Disease (picture Lupus on crack + a bit of Chron’s, multiplied by a bunch of rather painful ulcers… Everywhere ) and basically the pain was so intense and overwhelming, that when added to medical debt & dark depression (I’m sure the high doses of steroids/prednisone didn’t help matters) forced me to seek ‘professional help’. That therapist gave me a choice: A) she’d “fifty one fifty” me and admit me to the hospital immediately, or B) I could both promise that I would NOT harm myself, or any others – AND that I WOULD search “Art Journaling” on YouTube, following the path wherever it might lead!
I choose B. and I (quite literally) owe my life to it!! Now, I take NO pain killers, other than my creative releasing sessions. It is, by far, the single most effective medicine I can give to myself!! Hands down!!
Sorry to ramble, but this is my first time commenting, so I felt I should at least introduce myself a bit. 😉
    Thanks for listening… er, reading.
Thanks for inspiring and teaching me (all of you, who post/comment here)
And thank you for this amazing opportunity: to take a class on the art of transfer!
Just what the doctor ordered. 😉

  • Christi Conley July 8, 2013, 10:07 pm

I love the fact that you are keeping the transfer sheet to use later – that is so ME! This stuff (TAP) needs to be in my arsenal of art supplies – I could have SO much fun! Thanks for the chance to win & good luck all! 🙂

  • Denise Funfsinn July 8, 2013, 11:13 pm

I experimented a bit with TAP when it first came out – great product Thanks for being a part of the blog hop! ~Denise

  • Suzanne Gwynne July 8, 2013, 11:17 pm

I appreciate you all sharing your process with gelatin plates and TAP transfers. I have tried both and need some help getting better results. So Lesley’s class would be great!

  • Bonnie Kurz July 8, 2013, 11:44 pm

Love the antique look of the photograph. Would love to know how to do it.

  • Yvonne July 9, 2013, 12:22 am

    Hi,

What a lovely prize. It would be awesome to win it. Thanks for the chance.

  • Robin July 9, 2013, 7:10 am

I have been secretly viewing your easygoing art blog and videos for quite some time now (from a small Island on the east coast of Canada). My sister will be visiting from the west coast in a couple of weeks and we plan to cram in some serious gelli printing and journaling using many of your techniques and incorporating OOPS into our vocabulary. Lesley’s class would be an awesome addition to the mixed media knowledge we share with each other. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Tara July 9, 2013, 7:13 am

Sounds like a must try! Thanks. It’s top of my list to do…

  • Carol Lynn July 9, 2013, 12:24 pm

I have some Lazertran transfers, hope it is covered in the class. If not I’ll learn something new, I love taking classes and learning new things!

  • Rosina Ervin July 9, 2013, 4:17 pm

Wonderful! Thanks for being so generos with your time and talent

  • Lori July 9, 2013, 6:20 pm

What an amazing opportunity! I bought a package of this paper back in February and I have such a fear of using it that it just sits in front of me….I know it is mocking me. 🙂

  • Lynne Rattray July 9, 2013, 8:59 pm

You’ve inspired me to do something with my London photos! Hadn’t figured out how to transfer photos before, otherwise it looks more like scrapbooking than art.. Hope to learn more. Don’t ever give up on us – it must take a great deal of energy to do what you do but we all too silently appreciate it!

  • Barbara Backer July 9, 2013, 9:22 pm

I promised myself that I would concentrate on my art this summer. I’ve watched many of your videos on YouTube, and thank you for your generosity in sharing your techniques. My eight-year-old granddaughter visited me for all of last week, and we tried many of your creative ideas. We had so much fun.

I had not heard of this product, TAP, until today when I visited your blog for the first time. THANK YOU for introducing me to yet another wonderful creating product.

  • Nancy Lee July 9, 2013, 9:32 pm

I would love love love this opportunity. I am still new to this and would love to expand more!!

  • Karen Blackwell July 10, 2013, 7:22 am

I have some TAP and in the past learned how to use it with fabric. I have recently become interested in art journals and tried various means of transfer with no success. I never thought of using TAP. I am excited to try it and lessons would be great

  • Lynne Moncrieff July 10, 2013, 7:38 am

Such a creative use of TAP – WOW.
I adore TAP especially in conjunction with my much loved photo real stamps but I have never used TAP to transfer in the way that you have displayed. It just shows the versatility of this amazing product. I have so much I want to learn.
Thank you for the opportunity to be part of this amazing Giveaway.
    Wishes
    Lynne
