Black Lives Matter

Usually I scribble write in my journals but not here. I want to be able to read these names.

Each name on this page is a black person who was killed by police. And this is less than three months worth of names.

This list of names is enough to make anyone feel powerless, but there are signs of hope that this is changing, thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement.

If you want to know how you can help, take a look at the article, 47 Very Specific Answers to ‘What Can I Do to Help?

All lives matter, whatever colour you are, whatever size or faith or lack of faith you are. Whether you are rich or poor and whatever sex you are or feel you are. We all matter xx

    • Jessica Sporn June 15, 2020, 10:12 am

Yes, all lives matter. But right now, Black lives are hurting and in need of our attention most. A good analogy is going to the emergency room. Everyone there is ailing and needs help, but some people are more critical than others, and might have to be rushed to triage even if some others are sitting in the waiting room. It doesn’t mean that those other lives don’t matter. It means that the doctors need to attend to someone more critical. That is why we say Black Lives Matter. They need triage right now. Most of the rest of us can wait.

I understand that I will never understand, yet I stand!

    Thank you!

No lives matter until Black Lives Matter.

  • Beth June 12, 2020, 5:10 pm

Thank you for standing up for #BlackLivesMatter. We white people can no longer be silent and think because we’re not racist, we can sit back and do nothing. Please do not be hurt by any negative pushback.

Really glad you see you putting this out there! So many shy away from being open about their stance and I have a lot of respect for you for this.

Thank you, thank you! I’ve watched your wonderful videos for a long time, learned about what OOPS means :-), and love you even more by you taking a stand for BLM! I, too, feel powerless, but one foot in front of the other, together we can make changes. I feel like maybe this time things will begin to change. Thank you again for taking a stand.

  • Suzanne Ashworth June 12, 2020, 6:29 pm

Thank you, Carolyn, for this post. I hope people will be kind in their responses to you as there are a number of people who don’t agree with this viewpoint. Please know as a woman of color, Mexican, that I appreciate very much the willingness by you and so many people to examine their own privilege and work toward a more just and free society for everyone. We have a town here on our island where black men and women who’ve been killed by the police were honored with a chalk sidewalk display of names of those murdered by the police. When you see it laid out like that it is profoundly shocking and disgusting that this has gone on so long. I really liked your page and it made me think of this quiet form of protest. Thank you again for this video.

  • Michele G June 12, 2020, 6:33 pm

Thank you for this, Carolyn. It is very much appreciated and it touches my heart.

  • Rhonda June 12, 2020, 6:50 pm

Powerful, TFS. Your right, we can’t begin to understand how scared it must be if your a man of color walking or driving at night. Praying for all to take time to look at people, really look, not at color, but that we are all made by the same God. Again, your brave to share as some may give you a hard time. I appreciate your page so much Carolyn.

  • Suzanne L Eastman June 12, 2020, 7:09 pm

Thanks. You’ve taken a stand. I love your work and play with your ideas.

  • Linda T. Minton June 12, 2020, 8:03 pm

Thank you, Carolyn, for being brave enough to stand up and be counted. I know that as an artist and yet a business person as well, this was taking a chance on some potential backlash. I’m proud to “know” you.

  • Kit June 12, 2020, 8:56 pm

All life matters even George the criminal who shoved a gun in the belly of a pregnant woman trying to rob her high as a kite. Let’s hear it for the 100 cops who so far in 2020 died to protect our communities. BTW, BLM is a arm of ANTIFIA who want to collapse your country.

    • Sonewa Washburn June 14, 2020, 7:44 pm

      Kit,
Your argument is misguided. BLM is not part of ANTIFIA and never was. This is something that racist and white supremacists/nationalists try to say to deflect and twist the good that people are trying to do to fight systemic racism. Criminalizing a grassroots organizations’ effort to make positive changes to our country is a common tactic used by those entrenched in racism. Educating yourself regarding racism in history is key. Amazon Prime has an entire movie library that is under the heading “Black Lives Matter.” You might want to start there.

George did have a criminal record. Nobody is excusing that. He was trying to use a counterfeit bill when the police were called. They were not aware of his history when he had a knee in his neck for almost 9 minutes. Does that give a cop the right to kill a person in that manner? NO. Actually, not in any manner. He should have been handcuffed, put in the police vehicle for the law to deal with his crime. I hear the knee on the neck is how hunters kill deer after shooting them. They place their knee on the neck until the animal dies.

I won’t be commenting further. My previous post and this one is all I want to say. Thank you, Carolyn. Know that your support and those who have positive things to say are appreciated.

    • Michele Engel June 16, 2020, 9:01 am

Kit, in this country, all people are innocent until proven guilty, and if there is evidence that Mr. Floyd broke the law–whether it be by attempted armed robbery or knowingly passing a counterfeit bill, he was just as entitled to due process of law as anyone else. In this case, it appears that an officer of the law, who took an oath to defend and protect the lives of ALL people, acted instead as a vigilante guilty of brutally murdering a man who posed no threat to him or others while in his custody.

ANTIFA is a loosely organized, apparently leaderless, group of people who peacefully protest against the threat of fascist rule in this country. (Our military has taken up arms against fascist governments, and many have died fighting fascism all over the world in recent wars, by the way.) That’s because the U.S. is a democracy, not an autocracy, and ANTIFA recognizes attempts by some leaders in powerful political positions who seem to want to impose autocratic rule at the expense of our civil rights. They have a right to protest just as you do, and they have not been convicted of any crimes thus far.

Black Lives Matter (BLM) has no association with ANTIFA. That’s one of many conspiracy theories, and unless you can prove that such a partnership exists, you’d be wise not to spread false information.

Thank you, Carolyn! It’s important that we stand up and say this, and act on it. Thanks for the resource list too – we all need to do the work.

      • Michele Engel June 16, 2020, 9:12 am

Kit, that video contains neither facts nor evidence to back up the opinions expressed by the narrators. They have simply taken pieces of video/film footage out of context to create an overall impression of angry people shouting and rebelling about nothing. Or nothing that’s important to the narrators, anyway.
What do YOU think about the list of names that Carolyn Dube wrote on one page–the list of black people killed (KILLED) by cops in just the last three months.
Show me the same number of white people killed by cops in the last three months. Show me the same number of cops killed by white or black people in the last three months.
And then tell me what YOU think some of the people in that video might be angry about.
And let me ask you this: Have you ever in your life found yourself wishing you’d been born Black? If not, ask yourself why not.

    Brava! Carolyn, Brava!!

We cannot remain silent, that makes us complicit. I noticed in the responses that someone had said not to be hurt by negative feedback. Just remember, that that negative feedback says way more about them than you.

Again.. Brava!! Oh and thank you for the links! <3 <3 I'm proud to know you girl!

  • Anna Mae Gazo June 13, 2020, 4:17 pm

Thank you for taking a stand for BLM. The sooner the majority of white people stand up for black people, or any minority, subjected to police brutality, the sooner this can change. Changing the status quo, peacefully, is our responsibility.
Thank you for speaking out and using your art to promote justice!

  • Diana Miel June 14, 2020, 10:27 am

    Good for you, Carolyn,
The more white people speak up and support peaceful demonstration and goal oriented action by black people, the sooner we will see systemic racism dismantled. Because of my age, I’m still staying at home and not participating in demonstrations, which I would be doing as I have in the past. I want to be part of including people based on their character, not the color of their skin. I’m pleased to count you as a kindred spirit.

  • Sonewa Washburn June 14, 2020, 7:20 pm

I am black. I can’t begin to tell you how much your words meant to me.

Most people assume I am angry. I am, but I am mostly feeling tired, broken-hearted, and discouraged.

Unfortunately, police brutality has been an ongoing cycle in the black community. Only now, that most people carry a cell phone, have others had the opportunity to actually witness these events unfold.

Carolyn, watching your video and seeing the following article this morning,
    https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/george-floyd-s-death-has-be-tipping-point-white-people-ncna1229181
makes me feel hopeful that THIS time things may actually change. With the continued protests (of all races, religions, genders, etc.) and the push for changes, I pray to see these changes come in my lifetime.

  • Sonrisa July 15, 2020, 11:01 pm

Thank you for sharing this deeply personal art, Carolyn. I applaud your strength in examining your beliefs and commend your courage in being willing to publicly acknowledge the tragic truth that we Americans absolutely need to address the inequalities and injustices in our nation. These are painful conversations, but necessary ones. Thank you for joining caring Americans in our journey to make our nation the best America we can be! Blessings!

  • Polly August 28, 2020, 10:58 pm

Thanks for your post. We white folks have stood by too long-silent- in the face of injustice. By standing up and speaking out, we can help be part of the solution.
