Altered Book Play for Stencil Week

Video tutorial of an altered book and giveaway during Stencil Week with Carolyn Dube

Stencil videos and giveaways during Stencil Week with Carolyn Dube

It’s day 2 of Stencil Week!  You know I love bright and bold but there is a softer side too.  The more subtle part of me  popped up while I was playing in my altered  book journal.  Who would have guessed that I would use just one color…not me!

Video tutorial of an altered book and giveaway during Stencil Week with Carolyn Dube

Today’s stencil, Linked Small, used with spray ink created the background for one of my favorite face stamps by Pam Carriker.  Just because a stencil is square or rectangular doesn’t mean you have to use it that way!

You can watch An altered book tutorial with a rubber stamp and a stencil on YouTube here.

The giveaway is now closed.

Want to win the stencil I used in this project?  I am giving away one of these stencils to a randomly selected winner!  To be entered all you need to do is leave a comment telling me your favorite art supply.

Want another chance to win?  Just share it (Facebook, Google Plus, Pinterest, Twitter, etc.) and come back and leave another comment tell me where you shared it!

I’ll be announcing all the randomly selected winners from Stencil Week next Friday, Jan. 31st. right here.  Be sure to be entered before random.org  picks the winners for your chance to win!  And yes, international folks are eligible too!

Hmm, that’s a tough one and I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one – stencils and spray inks are both my favourite!

  • Laurie Hunt January 21, 2014, 1:06 am

“A” favorite art supply? Impossible. I like all art supplies. Sometimes I like them so much that I by them twice, and on very rare occasions a third time. So I still haven’t fulfilled the letter of the law when it comes to my favorite art supply. Hmm. I’ve got it. My favorite art supply is the one I don’t have yet, but I will just as quick as I can get it in my shopping cart! Sheesh, I did not realize id be letting you in on so much about my character playing along with you this week. I’m unfaithful to my color. I’m an addictive hoarding art supply maniac. I can’t wait to see what you will ask tomorrow.

  • Livvy January 21, 2014, 2:42 am

Love your page! Great idea to make a space in the middle of the stencil to do the stamping! I am having fun with gelatos at the moment but probably paint would be my constant favourite. Am off to share 🙂

  • Suzanne R. January 21, 2014, 3:58 am

My favourite art supply would have to be a combo of my Dylusions sprays and stencils. Love all the effects you can do with these in my art journal. Thanks for the chance to win Carolyn. 😉

  • Rebeca López January 21, 2014, 5:21 am

Just the one! not so easy… I would have to say… my stencils, and on second place my paints and inks!

  • Erin January 21, 2014, 6:00 am

I loved this video Carolyn. I’m a monochromatic girl so this really spoke to me! My favourite art supply would have to be matte medium – but it’s so hard to choose – so many, many supplies and so little time to explore.

  • Kay P January 21, 2014, 6:46 am

Today my favorite art supply is spray inks – all kinds. But wait a few days and I will change my mind and decide I can’t do without something else. Luckily you designers are good at showing us the options out there.

  • Mary C. Nasser January 21, 2014, 6:55 am

  • Sandy Gregg January 21, 2014, 8:00 am

  • morningdove January 21, 2014, 8:17 am

i think my favorite art product – love any kind of writing thingy – my fetish would be zany pens/pencils. i just discovered liquitex acyrlic ink and love making them into a spray. enjoyed your vid and love listening to your voice.

  • Sylvia Tabor January 21, 2014, 8:36 am

Just love this framing technique!!! And that stencil… so Victorian!!! Shared on Google+ too. Right now it has to be stencils… They add soooo much dimension/layers/textures to any project. Plus I can make stamps from them, which I love to do, using modeling paste and meat trays. They take on a whole new dimension! Then I also love to cut them up — I know, the horror!!! Depending on the pattern, it can completely change them, especially the edge. Also, I can make my own on my Cricut using transparencies. Stencils are the most versatile crafting tool ever!!!

  • Thea January 21, 2014, 10:13 am

  • Jessica Sporn January 21, 2014, 10:49 am

Terrific video and I love all your new stencils. My favorite art supply has to be my super skinny brush, which I use in just about every project. Sharing on FB now.

  • Susan Johnson January 21, 2014, 11:27 am

I am glad I am not the only one who cannot pick just one favorite supply. I am a paper and paint junkie, but time after time the one thing that appears on 90% of my work would be my white gel pen. For writing, highlighting, patterns – it is my go to supply!

  • Sandra Strait January 21, 2014, 11:28 am
  • Mary Ann January 21, 2014, 11:34 am

  • Cathy/Mutnik January 21, 2014, 11:54 am

Another fabulous video Carolyn! I tend to be afraid of the ink sprays for some reason. You sure make them look easy. Might just have to “brave up” and give them a try! Thanks again for the inspiration! :0)

  • Cathy/Mutnik January 21, 2014, 11:58 am

Oops, left off what my favorite art supply is. I pretty much love it all, but have been a lover of paper since a very young girl…..and I am talking about plain kind of paper that you can turn into your own design…..using all the other wonderful art supplies! hehe :0)

  • Ruth Feria January 21, 2014, 12:00 pm

I definitely go through phases as to what could be my favorite art supply…right now it seems to be Intense Pencils and Blocks. Nice video and your voice is has so much fun and enthusiasm in it. Thank you for all you do to help us with our artful journey.

  • Nicole Maki January 21, 2014, 12:05 pm

Gesso is definitely my fave. I use it for everything and whatever I put on top always works a little easier and with less frustration.

    Lovely page. Thanks for sharing.

  • Jennifer January 21, 2014, 12:25 pm

At the moment, my favorite supply would be gesso. It’s amazing stuff!

  • Trula January 21, 2014, 12:30 pm

My favorite art supply? I don’t think I’ll ever figure that one out ;). But maybe my homemade gelli plate or my black doodling pen right now.

  • Sara Ament January 21, 2014, 12:36 pm

Let’s see… right now my favorite art supply is my Dylusions Sprays! I would love to play with this stencil! I have shared your post on Facebook… https://www.facebook.com/sara.ament1 and I pinned it to my Pinterest Giveaways Board… http://www.pinterest.com/pin/76631631133640643/ . • Denise S. January 21, 2014, 12:48 pm

Right now my favorite art supply would be a simple graphite pencil. I am taking a year long class and am trying to learn how to draw a womans face

  • Kate M January 21, 2014, 12:56 pm

Really like the altered book concept and this technique is subtle and expressive.
My favourite art supply I think it could be ‘how to’ videos and social media. The internet has opened up my mixed media world… just think of a world without knowing about gelli plates!?

  • Marcia Nedland January 21, 2014, 1:36 pm

My latest fav is a Faber Castell Big pen in white with a bullet tip. It makes bigger, more perfect dots than the large Sharpie paint marker.

  • Carmen (whoopidoo) January 21, 2014, 2:14 pm

I quite often say I’m not a ‘stamp person’ but I love the way you used this one. I’m just starting to use these sprays too so it’s nice to see what you can do with them apart from just going through a stencil.

My favourite supply without a doubt is paint. Acrylic or watercolour in tubes or crayon form… though am just discovering oil pastels too and loving them so they might start trying to share that pedestal soon 😉

Thanks for another great video Carolyn x

favorite art supply??? Yikes, how do I pick just one? If I have to then it’ll be water soluble colored pencils.

  • Celeste Beck January 21, 2014, 2:42 pm

    Can’t wait to try this

  • valerie-Jael January 21, 2014, 2:43 pm

My faves? Corrugated cardboard, gesso, string, lace. Valerie

  • Kay Wallace January 21, 2014, 2:52 pm

Hi, Carolyn! Love your altered book journal! I have come to use just portions of my stencils, too! Just increases their value, doesn’t it?! Love the stamp you have used here, as I am a sucker for all things vintage! Happy to share your video on my Pinterest board!!

  • Barbara I. January 21, 2014, 3:02 pm

Thanks for the video. Love all the ones you post. I’m with most of your readers, it’s really hard to decide my favorite art supply. If I had to pick just one, I guess it would be my Neocolor II watercolor “crayons”. Thanks for the chance to win the cool stencil you used today.

  • Frieda Oxenham January 21, 2014, 3:10 pm

At the moment it’s my gelli plate but I’m quite fickle. It might be something completely different next week.

  • Jean January 21, 2014, 3:16 pm

It is really hard to say what the single favorite art supply is! I guess I would have to say my Gelli Plate but not much use without paints!

  • Tasha January 21, 2014, 3:40 pm

My favorite art supply at the moment are my new Neocolors II 🙂

  • Vicki January 21, 2014, 3:42 pm

You are so talented and inspiring Carolyn. As of right now my gelli plates (yes I said plates) are my favorite art supply. I sliced into my 8 by 10 and I am broken hearted. It still works but it is injured. You would have thought I cut myself when I saw that line in it. I must have layed it on something while carrying it to clean it.

  • Jo Murray January 21, 2014, 3:44 pm

Favourite art Supply? Hmmmm….could it be Golden acrylics, or modelling paste…..I guess lovely paper would be my fave at the moment.

  • Lynn January 21, 2014, 3:56 pm

I love this – it’s such a simple journal page but still so beautiful. I tweeted it.

  • Wanda Hentges January 21, 2014, 4:02 pm

I love how the stencil design fades as it goes out… fabulous!!!!

  • Jean Marmo January 21, 2014, 4:02 pm

I so enjoyed your video! I love working in old books! Loving the stencil and that stamp! I enjoy seeing you play with the ink- adding and removing. Makes me feel less afraid to try them on something like this!

  • Sarah Stainback January 21, 2014, 4:30 pm

Thanks for the tips on using stencils. I have a drawer full and rarely use any of them.
This video will help me use them more. My favorite art tool? Impossible to answer, but I guess it would have to be paper. I am a paperholic. If I see some pretty paper, I have to have it. It used to be that way with fabric, too!

  • Jo (fiddlesnips) January 21, 2014, 4:41 pm

Right at this moment, my most used art supply are sharpie markers, duct tape, and rainbow-colored rubber bands (I hang around with tweens a lot in my job at a public library). My favorites are still stamps, stencils, and some kind of ink/paint!

  • Pamela January 21, 2014, 5:14 pm

My favorite art supply must be paints and paper, any kind, any combination :-). Stencils fit right in there, just adding to the fun.

  • Amante del Papel January 21, 2014, 5:51 pm

my favorite supply are inks, because they give us all color!

  • Heather B. January 21, 2014, 6:18 pm

Gorgeous!!! I love it!! I love the stencil, I love the stamp, and I love the color. I was wondering what type of gesso do you use?(brand density, matte/gloss,etc.). Can’t wait to see your episode tomorrow.

    • Carolyn Dube January 21, 2014, 7:11 pm

I used Golden Gesso on this page. I buy it by the gallon (literally a gallon). No matte or gloss option on the label that I can see…but it is a very smooth gesso.

  • Kirsten Reed January 21, 2014, 6:34 pm

gorgeous ~ as always! I am so excited about your new stencils!! I know which ones will be on my next order! By the way ~ any particular reason for the word “emerge”…is it your word for 2014 by chance? xxoo

    • Carolyn Dube January 21, 2014, 7:08 pm

It’s not my word for 2014…I can’t seem to settle on just one for 2014 so no word yet! Working on it though…

  • Raine January 21, 2014, 6:43 pm

My favorite art supply right now is my Gelli plate…and stencils. I know that’s two but they go together like peanut butter and Gelli…jelly!

  • jona January 21, 2014, 6:49 pm

Favorite Art Supply – Stencils and Sprays! Thanks for another great journal idea!

  • Melissa January 21, 2014, 7:25 pm

Gosh I can only pick one???? I love so many…..I think my favorite would be rubber stamps….I love how versatile they are and how many different designs you can get. Besides they are fun to hoard. LOL

my favorite art supply has got to be anything brightly colored.. or paper..

  • Caroline D. January 21, 2014, 8:02 pm

Your book page is great! And I loved your statement about just because a stencil is square doesnt mean you have to use that way…lol.. so true! I love using just a portion sometimes. Hmmmm… favorite art supply… that is impossible to choose because there are so many good things and I have a good many of them. lol But to name one, I do love ink sprays. 🙂 And to name a 2nd that is a little more unusual ….that I am loving, is joint compound. 🙂

  • Deborah F January 21, 2014, 10:18 pm

My fave (this week…) is my white Molotow marker. I love it to add highlighting and accents to my journal pages and to any lettering. It just helps the designs to pop.

  • Cat Graves January 21, 2014, 10:19 pm

If I base my answer on historical usage, then my favorite art supply is Golden Heavy Body Acrylic paint, specifically the Quinacridone colors. I still remember my joy when I purchased most of them in an art store in Woodstock, New York! It was a wonderful vacation traveling around visiting all my NY friends!

Oh my gosh, there’s no rainbow! Love the monochromatic look on this one. My favorite art supply is any kind of acrylic paint, and I am most enamored with my Lumiere’s. Just don’t make me pick only 1 color!

What a great project. I have a box full of books I got from our local library discard sale. I usually tear them up, use the covers or just use them to clean my brayer. Next one will be an art journal! I shared your link on my pinterest page. Thanks for the great tutorial. It was a fun one.

  • Kate Robertson January 21, 2014, 11:35 pm

Right now I am loving my Portfolio water soluble oil pastels. They are so creamy and blendable. You can add water or not. Sometimes I start with them and other times I use them over acrylic paint.

Don’t make me pick.. all the others will be sad..

My favorite art supply is my Gelli plate. I use mono printed deli paper and card stock in collage and I love the variety of papers I can make with the Gelli, stencils, masks, and paint.

  • Kirsten Alicia January 22, 2014, 4:12 am

That is a fantastic page. I love that image & the shading you created is so effective – it was a “wow” moment for me as I watched. 🙂
My favourite art supplies at the moment are stencils & PaperArtsy’s Grunge Paste, can’t stop using them. Thanks for the chance to win.

I think my. fave is a set of colorful markers … you can write, make marks, add color. If I don’t have anything else, I’m happy with a set of markers.

  • Shari Bryant January 22, 2014, 11:21 am

omg, i couldnt possibly list a favorite. i love working with acrylic paint, thats what i do the most of. i have started experimenting a bit with glazes also and would love to get better with underpainting with glazes. thanks so much for the chances to win!

  • Robin B. January 22, 2014, 11:48 am

GESSO is my all time fave go to supply. And, I love how you have used it combination with the stencil, spray ink, and stamp!

  • Babs January 22, 2014, 5:53 pm

I love stencils cos they add dimension and great outlines that I couldn’t do myself – anything for a quick cheats way I say 🙂
thanks for another simple to do video – love it

  • Denise Spillane January 22, 2014, 9:38 pm

Another beauty, Carolyn. I love the beautiful color. Looks so pretty.

  • Barbara Albrecht January 22, 2014, 9:46 pm

I’ve been using Dylusions spray inks since they were introduced and never thought of using them this way…thank you for teaching me another way to use my loved sprays! I really like how you used just the one color…so unlike you…LOL!!! Super stencil, too!!

  • butterfliecrafter January 23, 2014, 3:45 am

Love seeing you manipulate the stamped image with just water, definitely going to have that ago. My favorite tool has to be the gelliplate, so versatile, forgiving, fun, addictive…of course then I also like acrylic paints, stencils, found objects… to use with the plate 🙂

  • Sophie H January 23, 2014, 5:26 am

  • Lorrie T. January 23, 2014, 12:41 pm

Oh, she is just GORGEOUS! Love that you used only one color, too. My favorite art supply? Just one?!? Hmmm… ok, it would have to be stencils. Pinned: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/472244710898548316/

Favourite supply?! You don’t ask much, do you? Hahaha! Right now I am in love with stencils, but if push came to shove, I’d have to go with pens. I love all kinds of pens, and own so many different ones. Stabilo Signo are very nice, and will write over almost anything!

  • gill edwards January 24, 2014, 5:28 am

my favourite art supply is my pens that i use for doodling. My black faber castell PITT pen and white Signo uni-ball. I can lose many hours just doodling away with those.

  • marylouh January 24, 2014, 11:16 am

I’ve been a stamper all along so I guess the stamp pad is my “go-to” item. I’m getting into coloring with copics and enjoy that. My shading isn’t the best but I’m happy with it. I’ve used the spray inks and enjoy those but don’t have much call for that because I’m a card maker. I want to branch out into more mixed media – using stencils, etc, – and I’m sure I’ll be getting into the sprays and liquid inks more.

  • edie January 24, 2014, 10:29 pm

My favorite art supply is anything with pigment in it. Especially bright neon pigments.
